French musician and regular member of VGMdb forums, dma, informed the English-speaking population of an article published in Black and White, a French magazine dedicated to Michael Jackson that talks about Sonic 3 and the supposed involvement of MJ. The following quote is taken from the latest issue released this month, in an interview with Brad Buxer:
B&W: Can you clarify the rumor that Michael had in 1993 composed the music for the Sonic 3 video game, for which you have been credited?
Buxer: I’ve never played the game so I do not know which tracks the developers have kept among the work Michael and I did, but we did compose music for the game. Michael called me at the time for help on this project, and that’s what I did. And if he is not credited for composing the music, it’s because he was not happy with the result sound coming out of the console. At the time, game consoles did not allow an optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music…
B&W: One of the surprising things in this soundtrack is that you can hear the chords from Stranger in Moscow, which is supposed to have been composed later…
Buxer: Yes, Michael and I had composed those chords for the game, and it has been used as a base for Stranger in Moscow. […]
It’s been a long running myth in the videogame industry that MJ worked on the Sonic 3 soundtrack, and numerous articles with theories, analysis, and investigations have been done over the years. Now we have official confirmation that he actually did participate in the project.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OMFG IT’S TRUE!!!!

Wow, utterly amazing. Never thought we would know the truth one way or another.
I’d never even heard of this… I stopped playing Sonic games after Sonic 2. I rented Sonic 3 once, and got stuck in that circus zone where there was this spinning cylinder that you had to run on and make it move up and down and get under it. Couldn’t do it. Tried for hours.
You never heard of this? It’s one of the biggest myths ever in video games really. I do smell some humbug in Buxer’s answer though. Mj was a huge game fan and Moonwalker previously included MJ music, I can’t really see him going into Sonic 3 and expecting the sound to be more than it was.

Oh man that is the same part of the circus zone that i could never get past either! maybe now that it’s been 15 years i could give it another go…
I wouldn’t call this full confirmation, but it’s as close to confirmation as we’ll ever get, since SEGA will never admit it. Right now wiki calls this claim “dubious.” Perhaps someone needs to update wikipedia. *wink*
related to the discussion, I think THIS is relevant to all our interests:

Wow, I never realized it was such a known problem spot for gamers. I tried it for about a whole continue’s worth of lives, dying when the time ran out, and gave up on the game entirely.

For everyone wondering about the cylinder in Carnival Night zone, just stand in place and press Up and Down repeatedly on the D-Pad.
I was stuck there for about a week until I realized.
For the longest time, I thought this would just be another one of the many never-to-be-answered video game myths. Game had such great music — some of my favorite Sonic music (IceCap for the win, Hydrocity Zone 2 too!)

I always wondered why Sonic 3’s music was so awesome. Since S3 and S&K are basically one big game, does that mean some of the S&K music was produced by MJ too?
