Ha! Sorry ’bout the jab, Cakewalk/Sonar fans.
All kidding aside, the new updates to the DS’s NitroTracker and the PSP’s PSP Rhythm are pretty impressive, considering that they run on portable game systems.
NitroTracker has just added sample looping and drawable envelopes to its aresenal. This baby already has live sampling, tracking, and midi built in. You can basically just record a sound, make it loop, draw an envelope, and there you have your instant instrument. Damn!
The video above is a fancypants trailer for PSP Rhythm. According to CreateDigitalMusic, this software has just added a new sound engine, a new visual interface, and a new ADSR synth mode. Double Damn!
PSP Rhythm isn’t the only player in the PSP music scene. If you’re homebrew-ready, you should be chomping at the bit for PSPSeq, coming soon.
This world of portable music making amazes me. I’ve just started with sequencing in Daigasso Band Bros. DX for the DS. More on that later.
Would you use any of these to make music on the go? How about live?

Sheesh, there really are a lot of options these days. I’ve been waiting for the KORG DS-10. I forgot all about NitroTracker… but it’s not an official release, right?
