Ben Prunty (FTL, Gravity Ghost, Music Workbench) is almost back with a new soundtrack release. Available for a $5 pre-order until Thursday, July 27th, is his 27-track score to The Darkside Detective. The game itself is an homage to the classic 2D point-and-click adventure with a sense of (British) “humour” but Prunty says his music plays it straight-faced.
“This helps sell the atmosphere and lets the comedy do its own thing without the player being distracted,” Prunty explains on the album’s Bandcamp page. It also makes the music an enjoyable listen on its own without any context from the game. To me it has that trademark Ben Prunty sound; cool downtempo synths and beats with an air of mystique and danger, at least in the current handful of sample tracks. Prunty also adds that while he was originally inspired by John Carpenter and 80’s film scores, he ultimately drew from a larger pool of inspirations including “Danny Elfman, William Orbit, Nine Inch Nails, funk music, and old video games.”
Once the game launches on July 27th the soundtrack price goes up to $7 so check out the four sample tracks above and grab it today for $5 if the cool, smoldering mood strikes you.
