  If you like scrolling shooters (also referred to as “shmups”), you should be well acquainted with the company CAVE. They’ve made some incredible games in the past few years.

  Their games also tend to have awesome fusion rock- and dance-inspired soundtracks. One of their first self-published albums, in January of 2006, was the IBARA Original Sound Track (catalog number CVST-0003). The single disc soundtrack, which also includes a few arranged tracks and a voice collection, is a special little gem in my ever-changing collection of VGM. And that’s why I wanted to tell you, dear reader, all about it.

  I’ll be honest. Aside from knowing that Yuji Naka, Basiscape, and SuperSweep were involved with Let’s Tap, I barely knew anything about the game. Based on some videos I watched prior to its release, I thought it was mostly focused on running and jumping through a variety of mini-games using tap controls, but it turns out that this description only applies to the “Tap Runner” portion of Let’s Tap. There are actually a number of different games and modes to check out, with “Rhythm Tap” being my favorite.

  So what is “Rhythm Tap,” you ask? It’s exactly what it sounds like, and that’s a rhythm game that utilizes tapping as the sole input mechanism. I know it sounds much too simple, but it’s actually really engaging and a whole lot of fun. Plus, with an amazing soundtrack provided by Basiscape and SuperSweep (you can win yourself a copy in our contest here), there’s no reason not to give the game a chance for the $30 asking price.

  While the game is already out in Japan, it hits store shelves in the US tomorrow, and we’ve got the highly contagious soundtrack sitting here just for you. You may remember that Carl was very impressed with the blend of quirky electronic music and moving beats provided by members of Basiscape, SuperSweep and others, and now it’s your chance to add this disc to your collection.

  So, it’s down to the same question once again: what do you have to do to win? Simple! Since Let’s Tap emphasizes simple gameplay and a retro visual style reminiscent of classic games, we’ve decided to go retro on you.  Answer me these questions three, and we’ll pick a winner at random from the correct entries:

  3. What was Naka’s official role on the original Sonic the Hedgehog?

  Sounds like hentai, but it’s not. I guess POWER DoLLS is a strategy game series for the PC centered on an all-female combat unit that utilizes mechas. DoLLS interestingly is an acronym for “Detachment of Limited Line Service.” Is it all starting to make sense to you? Well, not for me either, but what I can tell you is that Hiroto Saitoh’s music for the series is amazing.

  This album goes even further though, providing you with three different versions of the original POWER DoLLS soundtrack. There’s an FM version (awesome!), a MIDI version, and the focus of this release, an all-new arranged version featuring remixes from Saitoh, the SuperSweep team, and even ESTi from Korea!

  Researchers have announced their findings today that the Let’s Tap Soundtrack is highly contagious, and are warning listeners that coming within close proximity of this album will put them at risk for developing “Tapmania.” Confirmed symptoms of Tapmania may include but are not limited to: Interspace Disco Infernos, Boogie Fevers, and Rocketing Stars.

  Analysts have concluded that trace amounts of Basiscape are reacting with the heavy concentrates of Supersweep, which then attract and bond with the free radicals from Prope. This highly infectious mixture of ingredients is believed to cause musical euphoria if the pattern of repeated listening is left unchecked.
