Super Guitar Bros. Release Ocarina of Time Cover Album

The acoustic duo of Sam and Steve that make up the Super Guitar Bros. have finally released their album covering the majority of the soundtrack from the classic Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Hinted at both over their Twitch stream and at last year’s MAG Underground show, the finishing touches were put together on the album and it first debuted in its entirety on the main stage at this past MAGFest last month.

Titled simple Ocarina of Time, the album covers 25 tracks from game’s original music, all done in acoustic guitar and touches on all of the classic tunes from the game, including “Song of Storms”, “Gerudo Valley” and “Kakoriko Village”.

Pre-sales of the album were available at MAGFest, but the album is now live to purchase either as a digital album or as a physical CD on the duo’s Bandcamp.

It’s been just over a week since MAGFest 2017 and a great deal of decompressing was required to be able to properly sum up this year’s experience. I was fortunate enough to see more performances than I normally would (thanks to a willingness to be dragged around), and therefore think I have a pretty good account of just how well this year’s prime Music and Gaming Festival went.

From the main stage to the underground to the secret shows, this year’s MAGFest was a solid lineup and featured a bit of everything to tickle your fancy.

I was unable to make MAGFest again this year, but am very happy that MAGFest’s channel has videos available of some key events. As things only just wrapped up a few days ago I expect the list of videos to grow. I wrote about the videos they posted from the 2016 event which you can revisit here.

I have added the MAGFest Underground Playlist above, which features some awesome performances by Cowabunga Pizza Time, Gimmick, Jackal, Michael Zucker, Search Snake, Steel Samurai, Super Guitar Bros., Super Soul Bros., The Mountain Chiefs, The Tiberian Suns and Triforce Quartet (who I said was runner up for best arranged album of 2016).

There are plenty more concert videos and panel videos you can watch directly on MAGFest channel. Keep checking back as I’m sure there will be more videos added soon.

New Super Guitar Bros Album “Nice” Now Available

The acoustic duo known around as the Super Guitar Bros. (aka. Sam Griffin & Steve Poissant) have at long last released their second full-length album as a follow up to their self-titled premier album in 2013. The new album, “Nice”, features 17 tracks spanning several classic games such as Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania III and of course several Super Mario titles. It also features some of the most interesting album art for a VGM release I’ve seen since entering the community, which can take as you may.

The album is currently in digital format on Bandcamp at a “Pay What You Want” price, or as a physical CD for $10. The duo recently performed at San Francisco Comic-Con and PAX West 2016, and, you can also catch the Bros. streaming regularly on their Twitch channel for live practice, mini-performances and other shenanigans.

It’s been about a week since the conclusion of MAGFest 2016, the music and gaming event’s 14th year in operation, and as for any dedicated MAG-goer, it’s a lot to digest all at once. MAGFest has grown in size and scope ever year since it’s inception, and it’s impossible for any one person to properly cover everything they set out to – whether you’re going for fun or otherwise. I had the pleasure of attending with Michael this year, and we both had agreed that there was no way we could get to everything we wanted to to report back on. Events like MAG become a “Best Laid Plans” scenario every year, but we do what we can.

Held yet again at the Gaylord at National Harbor, this year was another series of being awestruck at how large the event has gotten, and how diverse it’s become. Thankfully, I managed to check in on a few keys things, some old and some brand new, that were definitely worth noting.

The music guest lineup for this year’s PAX East has been released. As is the tradition of PAX East, the festivities of Friday and Saturday conclude with a series of evening concerts. This year’s concert lineup includes a number of returning favorites, including Bit Brigade and the Triforce Quartet. So if you were lucky enough to acquire passes for the Boston event, you’ll be in for some excellent music to end Friday and Saturday night.

Friday’s concerts will feature the Super Guitar Bros, the Triforce Quartet, and Paul and Storm. The second night of concerts will call upon the talents of Freezepop, Bit Brigade, and MC Frontalot. If you happen to be attending PAX East 2015, be sure to make room in your schedules for each of these acts. You can check out the official PAX East site for more announcements and scheduling details.

Our next group on Know Your Mag features a music style that is a little different from what we’re used to hearing at MAGFest. Super Guitar Bros is an acoustic guitar duo with a unique take on game music. While Steve Poissant and Sam Griffin may not be actual brothers, they are a talented music duo that have been producing some great videogame music remixes.

Steve Poissant performs on a Steel String Guitar and Sam Griffin performs on Nylon String Guitar, creating a very chilled out and mellow set of game music arrangements. Their concerts tend to have simple set ups. Just the two guitarists sitting on their chairs and performing for the audience. Nothing flashy or over-the-top. Simply well arranged acoustic guitar pieces being played by two friends. Their arrangements cover a wide field of game franchises, but tend to focus on the older, more well known game tunes. They’ve covered music from Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, Ninja Gaiden, Sonic the Hedgehog, and (of course) the Super Mario Bros franchise.

Back in October of 2013 they released their first full album on Bandcamp, simply titled Super Guitar Bros. The album contains many of the covers I’ve mentioned above. They also have a Youtube channel featuring many of their other arrangements. This year they will be one of the featured groups at MAGFest 13. We’ll update with the performance times of the all the performers when they are released. Make sure you register for MAG if you haven’t done so already.
