  Last October Michael posted a roundup of composers who have turned to Twitch and YouTube to broadcast their music creation process to the world. Among them was FTL composer, Ben Prunty, who began streaming the regularly scheduled Music Workbench series earlier this year. Whether you tuned in or not, the results of his streams have now been compiled on the new, free album titled Music Workbench.

  “During Music Workbench, I make music live on twitch, talk about my creative and technical processes, and answer questions from viewers. The purpose of the show is to help demystify the music production process, which too often is seen as pure wizardry.”

  The album offers five tracks that were created during live streams and highlight Prunty’s ethereal electronic style with some nice surprises and deviations to mix things up. There’s also the track “Going to Market” which was created off the air and added as a bonus track. You can grab the album for free from Bandcamp and join Ben Prunty’s Music Workbench streams every Saturday at 2pm PST on Twitch.

  It seems our friends over at Arecibo Radio will be closing down their active status by the end of the week, according to a recent tweet and confirmed to me by the station’s management.

  Yes, Arecibo Radio will shut down on July 4th. Hosts who still wish to keep doing their respective shows will move to 8BitX. I can’t think of a better place for Arecibo hosts to go, many of us are friends and have worked and partied together at MAGFest and other music related events. With 8BitX absorbing Arecibo, our listeners will have one single and robust internet radio station they know they can go to and enjoy.

  Arecibo Radio has been a staple in streaming video game music, chiptunes and hosting listening parties for the past 6 years. Be sure to tune in for its last days in operations and give it a fitting send off and some much-deserved love, and also change over your bookmarks to 8bitX to continue listening to several staple Arecibo hosts as they make the trek to their new home.

  We’re in that age where we want everything at our fingertips without the need to go searching too extensively. We subscribe to feeds and bookmark databases so we always know where we can go for all of our information and news on any particular topic.

  Streaming has become a popular thing in this age where traditional radio is becoming quickly antiquated. When you have the ability to create and stream nearly any amount of any genre of music, why limit yourself to stations that cater to a larger demographic? Video game music is no different, with entire online stations dedicated to just game music and VGM arrangements. So where are some of the best places to go to get your steady game music fix?

  Did you happen to tune in to the PIANO OPERA FINAL FANTASY IV/V/VI USTREAM interview with Nobuo Uematsu and pianist Hiroyuki Nakayama about the album tonight? I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t, as I only found out about it today myself, but about 450 fans tuned into the Famitsu-exclusive stream to hear the interview along with samples from the album.

  It was only a few weeks ago that we posted about Earthscape, a new original album from composer Alexander Brandon. It was written specifically to sound like old game music, and is somewhat of a backlash against all the generic Hollywood soundtracks that seem to be pumped into Western games these days. Sounds like a damn good premise to me, and even better, it’s done!

  I highly recommend heading over to Alexander Brandon’s Bandcamp page to check it out. You can currently stream the entire album for free, and purchase it in mp3, flac, or a variety of other formats if you think his efforts are deserving of some cash (trust me, they are!). Enjoy, and watch for our review in the coming weeks!
