RobKTA & GameChops Release Ridge Racer Remix Album

RobKTA and GameChops’ latest release, Ridge Racer Forever, is out now to celebrate Summer jams and Namco’s storied racing franchise. With the PlayStation’s 20th Anniversary coming up next month in North America it also serves as a fitting tribute to the console that helped launch the Ridge Racer series. For Rob the album has a much more personal backstory as it inspired him to get into video game remixing in the first place.

“I think the time has come to pay the proper tribute to this series, picking some of my ever favorite tracks and putting my own spin on them, house, electronica, experimental flavorings – all to pay tribute to a series of racing games that was special to me. This EP is dedicated to all Ridge Racers worldwide that keeps the arcade racing spirit alive!”

The album contains six tracks spanning the history of the series from Ridge Racer Revolution up to its 2005 debut on the PlayStation Portable. The tracklist includes:

2. Shady Movement (Silhouette Dance – Ridge Racer Type 4 Remix)

When he’s not busy producing some of my favorite bangin’ video game remixes, DJ Cutman can be found playing through a ton of games on his YouTube channel. It’s here that he’s launched a new series called SmashTalk where he chats with other personalities from the gaming community while they play a competitive game.

The pilot episode features comedian/songwriter Brentalfloss and is as amusing as you’d expect for an interview conducted during a game of Mario Kart 8. Alongside complaints about red koopa shells there’s a good discussion about Brentalfloss’ academic education, his favorite childhood games and a message to others trying to break into the YouTube scene. He also lays out the history behind Wario while winning a race; the guy is talented. Check it out up above or over on YouTube.

Extra Credits Has A New Show On VGM Remixers

The people behind the web series Extra Credits have started a new weekly video series titled Extra Remix. For those of you unfamiliar with Extra Credits, it’s a weekly show, narrated by Dan Floyd and written by James Portnow, that covers topics on how videogames are designed and how they can be improved. Over the past several years they’ve covered a wide range of topics including Free to Play Games, Combining Game Genres, Graphics vs Aesthetics, and many others.

Starting back in April, the Extra Credits team has been adding new types of content to their weekly rotation, including Extra Remix, James Recommends, and the just recently announced Design Club. Extra Remix is focused on discussing and promoting the work of videogame remix artists. Host Dan Floyd introduces viewers to a new artist each week, giving some background information on the artist and playing some examples of their work. Each episode ends with a full remix track to showcase the artist’s abilities. So far they’ve dedicated episodes to artists like Big Giant Circles, Zircon, and CarboHydroM. They even dedicated an entire episode to the site Overclocked ReMix (seen below).

It’s an interesting web series that highlights the work of some very talented remix artists. This is a great way to get introduced to some new music remixers, or to become more familiar with the people behind some of your favorite VGM remixes. A new episode of Extra Remix goes up every Tuesday. Be sure to check this web series out.

Dwelling of Duels – A 10th Anniversary Retrospective

There are very few fan-made, independently-operated places on the internet these days that can say they’ve survived a decade and are still kicking. Even more so for places that dedicate themselves to the love of video game music and re-imagining favorite tunes from hundreds of games both past and present. As of today, there’s only one place that can boast that it’s survived 10 years as a full-blown competition between gaming music fans to create the most awesome and badass re-compositions of classic (and even obscure) video game tracks in a battle royale to claim superiority on a regular basis.

That place has been known as the “Dwelling of Duels“. Wanna know what it’s all been about these past years?

OCR’s Unsung Heroes: The ‘Sung’ Refers to the Singing (Review)

They had me at “Suikoden.” Unsung Heroes is one of the best album concepts to come out of the OCR community as an arrangement album dedicated entirely to games that have received minimal attention from arrangers over the years. I first caught a glimpse of the album at MAGFest X earlier this month, and when it was released yesterday on OverClocked ReMix, I immediately ran over to check it out.

Titles arranged include the previously-mentioned Suikoden as well as Persona 3, Faxanadu, Legacy of the Wizard, Willow, and Secret of Evermore. Oh, and there’s singing if you couldn’t guess from the title of this post.

Let’s Listen Aggressively: Contra 4 Rocked ‘n’ Loaded (Review)

Well, oops. We had a lot of coverage of Contra 4: Rocked ‘n’ Loaded on OSV leading up to the album’s release back in March 2010, but it somehow managed to slip through the cracks when it came to a review. Well, after seeing and talking to many of those involved this past week at MAGFest about the status on their Rockman X arrange album and realizing our boo-boo with the Contra 4 album, I was determined to go back and review it.

Who’s Bad? Metroid Arrange 25th Anniversary (Review)

While The Bad Dudes announced their 25th anniversary tribute to the Metroid franchise back in August, we haven’t heard a whole lot about it leading up to its December 20th release date. I felt there was much more hype behind CHRONOTORIOUS, which I loved to death, but I admit I actually preferred having this album a little more nebulous before I was finally given the opportunity to listen to it.

The album is out tomorrow, and we’ve checked out all it has to offer. Will it hold your ears in captivity with each and every piece?
