  We’re continuing our spotlight on women in video game composing  with one of the components of the Donkey Kong Country musical experience and beyond with Eveline Fischer! (Eveline Novakovic if you’re looking her up under her married name, but we’ll be referencing her under the name she used when composing the majority of the works we’ll be listing) We’ll also highlight some of her non-composing works, including some voice work you may not have known was her!

  And what good timing too, as the DKC Mix’t Ape ’94 arrangement album just released today with much of Fischer’s work arranged by several artists! How’s that for relevance?

  Growing up a Yankee fan, Curt Schilling was never a name I wanted to hear. He was outspoken, lethal on the mound, and a fierce competitor. My opinion of him changed when I learned that he was also outspoken about his love of gaming and fantasy. He was unapologetic about the wealth of time he and his children had put into World of Warcraft and even mentioned wanting to develop a game himself. A few years later, we are graced with the first major release from Schilling’s 38 Studios, Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning. Assembling a team of all-stars in their own right, Schilling called upon comic book legend (and baseball fanatic), Todd McFarlane, Oblivion‘s lead game designer, Ken Rolston, and New York Times bestselling, fantasy author, R.A. Salvatore, to help create this ambitious first outing.

  I have written several times about the difficulties in writing a score for an RPG in that, as Gothic‘s Kai Rosenkranz said, a composer can get into trouble making music too melodic as it can grow monotonous. Grant Kirkhope was Schilling’s hired gun to score this monstrous game. Did he strike out or hit one out of the park? (more…)

  David Wise’s Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest is widely accepted as one of the very best soundtracks on the Super Nintendo, and rightfully so. The soundtrack is a huge complex beast, with eerie ambiance, melodic masterpieces and funky monkey disco which still holds up today, maybe even shining brighter than ever, showcasing incredible diversity in an age of bland orchestra epics. Even in doujin, the soundtrack has now become highly respected after Smash Bros Brawl brought it back into the light, and many doujin albums now feature “Stickerbush Symphony.”

  Now, OverClocked Remix is gearing up to release their newest project, Serious Monkey Business, honoring the work of Wise through some of the best arrangement artists around. I had the pleasure of seeing Geoffrey Taucer, one of the project leaders at MAGFest 8, and it was decided to shed some more light on the project. So here today you can read our chat about the project, and there is a very nice surprise in store for the fans of this soundtrack, so make sure you read on!

  We here at OSV are huge fans of Dwelling of Duels, a monthly game arrangement competition held over at The Minibosses Message Board. The rules are simple: every month has a specific theme, such as game specific, system based, or character based where you can only arrange a song within that set theme. The songs must contain one live instrument and from there on, it’s all up to you. Let’s take a look at the results of September’s DoD, “Rareware Month,” and at the upcoming October DoD.

  Rumor: Killer Instinct 3 To Feature Worst Main Theme Ever?

  Can this be real? It looks like the same note over and over again, but who knows. Our friends over at Destructoid posted this questionable image earlier today, which is allegedly sheet music for the “Main Theme” from Killer Instinct 3. While the title hasn’t been announced, rumors have been flying, and this only adds fuel to the fire if these strange lines and dots on a piece of paper mean anything to you.

  I guess it would be interesting of the game’s music ends up being the cause of the leak of the title’s existence.  Score another one for game audio! Even though I joke about the sheet music here, I’ll be excited to hear the game’s music… if it’s actually being developed.

  Are you a fan of the Killer Instinct soundtracks of old? Do you think this sheet music contains an epic masterpeice that I’m just too ignorant to understand?
