For those making the trek to San Antonio, Texas this weekend to attend PAX South 2017, and are interested in the video game music and audio side of things, here’s a quick and handy list of both the musical performances playing at the event, as well as the VGM, music industry panels and any fun music-related panels to check out.

MAGFest 2017 is only two days away and we’re furiously prepping ourselves for the event festivities. For those also attending, full announcements and a guidebook for the event are now available. Beyond the music artist lineup we announced earlier, you can check out the list of guests, MCs and a whole lot more gaming music-related information. Highlights include:
- Guest composers, including Alexander Brandon (Dues Ex), Davis Wise (Donkey Kong Country, Yooka-Laylee), Austin Wintory (Journey, The Banner Saga) and more.
- Game Voice Actors, such as Ellen McLain (Portal), John Patrick Lowrie (Team Fortress 2), Matt Mercer (Resident Evil 6, Overwatch) and others.
- Misc. concerts and musical mini-events like MAGFest Underground, Dwelling of Duels, Chipspace, Jamspace, etc.
- Music industry and community panels (DAWs for Chiptunes & Soundtracks, Remixing VG Music 101, Demoscene for Dummies, etc.)

Currently the Gaylord has a few extra rooms opened up, so if you are thinking of pulling a last minute attendance, you should jump on that now. There are a lot of great gaming events, festivals, and conventions to attend every year. Many consider spring to be the start of the convention season, but for me the year always begins with attending MAGFest, usually held in either January or February. Like many of the previous years, the fourteenth iteration of the Music and Gaming Festival was held at the Gaylord at National Harbor, Maryland and hosted several concerts, panels, and plenty of other fun gaming events.

As Brenna mentioned in her post earlier this year, it’s nearly impossible to cover everything that the festival has to offer. In fact, having now read up Brenna’s MAGFest adventures, I realize that we had vastly different schedules and experiences at this past year’s event. While the two of us combined certainly couldn’t cover everything at the festival, I hope these breakdowns illustrate the variety and quantity of things available for attendees to experience. (more…)

Batman Composer & More Confirmed for Game Music Connect 2015

The people at Game Music Connect today revealed the final speakers to be added to the lengthy line-up for its third annual international video game music conference which returns to The Purcell Room at London’s Southbank Centre on September 15.

Rocksteady Studios’ resident ‘BATMAN’ composer and audio director Nick Arundel (Batman: Arkham Knight, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Asylum) and renowned game and film conductor Allan Wilson (Fable and Harry Potter video game series, Avengers: Age of Ultron) will join Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Director of Music, Chuck Doud and COOL Music CEO/Composer Agent, Darrell Alexander for a high-powered roundtable discussion on recording live orchestra for video games, “Score To Studio 2”. The Score To Studio 2 panel seeks to pull the curtains back on how this extraordinary machine works, highlighting the specific challenges which video game projects present compared with other entertainment media.

Boston Festival of Indie Games 2014 Recap

Over the past few months, there were a fair number of gaming conventions and festivals being held. MAGFest had a new event with MAGFest 8.5 in Washington DC; Portland, Oregon had the XOXO Festival, covering arts and technology; and of course PAX Prime was held at the end of August in Seattle, Washington. There was however another small festival that took place on September 14th in Boston, Mass. This was the Boston Festival of Indie Games.

This was the third year that the Boston Festival of Indie Games has been running. Held only on one day, the event is focused on board games and digital games from the local Boston indie game scene. The event also hosts lectures on various industry subjects, with a diverse collection of guests. This year had plenty of great stuff to see and do. While it was impossible to see and cover absolutely everything that happened this year, I would like to give a brief overview of the event. So with that said, let’s take a look at what the festival had on offer this time around. (more…)

PAX East 2010: OSV Will Be There, And You Should Be Too!

Are you going to Boston this weekend for the debut of Penny Arcade’s East Coast Expo? Great! We’ll be there too, carrying bags full of journalism, instant noodles and other terrible junk food that we’ll probably regret eating later. But more importantly, we’ll bouncing around the Hynes Convention Center like overstimulated Yorkshire terriers covering all sort of music-related happenings at PAX East.

Original Sound Version Is Going To MAGFest!

That’s right, many of the staff members of OSV will be traveling out to spend New Years in Virginia at the Music and Gaming Festival, better known as MAGFest. This will be the 8th time the convention is taking place, and as always there will be plenty of bands, special guests and activities going on to spend your valuable time with.

Jayson Napolitano and yours truly, Audun Sorlie will be at hand to take part in the festivities, hanging out with the bands and taking in way too much alcohol for our fragile little bodies. and other staff members are sure to be coming as well. MAGFest takes place in Alexandria, VA at the Hilton Mark Center from January 1st to 4th, with concerts and events every day.
