  If you don’t know what Neurovision is, you need to find out! In our OSVOSTOTY 2009 awards, I noted that it was my favorite album of the year, but at the time we unfortunately did not have an ‘other’ category, so it was relegated to an honorable mention. In a nutshell, Neurovision is Square Enix composer and synthesizer operator Mitsuto Suzuki’s second solo album released on iTunes in 2009. It features dreamy soundscapes, catchy pop-inspired melodies, and some great production values.

  We were able to dedicate an entire interview session with Mitsuto Suzuki to this amazing album, and there were certainly more than a few surprises regarding his inspiration and what he has planned next.

  We recently had the pleasure of visiting the Square Enix Japan offices where we were able to speak with a number of staff composers as well as some who have since moved on. Aside from seeing the impressive internal sound studio where Square Enix produces all of its music, we had some interesting conversations with the composers, and we’ve selected our time with Mitsuto Suzki to start off our series.

  In the interview we touch on everything from Suzuki’s former status as an arranger and synthesizer operator to now a composer with the release of The 3rd Birthday. We get additional details on how he was approached to work on the game as well as the logistics of his solo work released under the Square Enix label and the SQ series.

  I’ve been a fan of Square Enix synthesizer operator Mitsuto Suzuki since the Square Enix Bootleg series. If you’re not familiar with the three Official Bootleg iTunes releases, I encourage you to get up to speed as they offer some great music from a number of Square Enix composers and sound team members. There are even a few tracks from the Bootleg series that are remixed on Suzuki’s two solo albums.

  But the Bootleg series is for another time. Neurovision is Suzuki’s second solo effort that has been published by Square Enix, with his first being In My Own Backyard, which Patrick told you about last month. While In My Own Backyard introduced you too Mitsuto Suzuki the artist, Neurovision expands on his signature sound, delving even further into the mesmerizing electronic soundscapes that he so masterfully crafts for your listening pleasure.
