When people think Nobuo Uematsu, they think “Final Fantasy music” – and that isn’t necessarily always the case. Uematsu has done much and more beyond Final Fantasy, and I hope this top 5 list will broaden your horizons!
This list will not only contain soundtracks, but also his other, original work!

I think a lot of people were with me in wondering what the heck the LORD of VERMILION Re:2 FAN KIT album was when it was first added to VGMdb. I’m still slightly confused after being told during out interview with Izumi Tsukushi and Akio Shiraishi that it’s a release containing music for the “new version” of the Lord of Vermilion 2 arcade units in Japan, but I guess it’s simple enough to just pop the CD in and give it a listen to see what it’s all about.
This album contains arranged tracks from the original Lord of Vermilion 2 as well as from other Square Enix franchises, including Final Fantasy, Seiken Densetsu, Romancing SaGa, and Valkyrie Profile.

We were thoroughly impressed with Nobuo Uematsu’s rock ‘n’ roll antics on the original LORD of VERMILION soundtrack in January 2009, so I admit I was surprised to hear that Hitoshi Sakimoto and the team at Basiscape would be handling the sequel. As it turns out, Hitoshi Sakimoto is responsible for all of the composition this time around, aided by a large list of arrangers from the Basiscape roster, who mainly handle the more rock-oriented tracks.
Another interesting note is that while the first LORD of VERMILION soundtrack was published by Dog Ear Records, LORD of VERMILION II’s soundtrack comes courtesy of Square Enix directly. Who knows what the reasons are for the change, but I was certainly curious to hear how Hitoshi Sakimoto would interpret the world of LORD of VERMILION.

It’s about time we heard from Nobuo Uematsu again! I guess when other composers are releasing something seemingly every other month, Uematsu’s two or so releases a year seem too few. We mentioned that this album was set for a January 1, 2009 release, and here it is with 22 tracks and over 75 minutes of new music.
If you take a look back in time here on OSV, you’ll notice that one of our first posts was about this game’s music. Rock to the core, Uematsu employs his own synth work along with live guitar, bass, and drums to drive home the action for this arcade title. It’s pretty cool that they’re even putting out a soundtrack for an arcade game, and hey , the music is good too!

That’s some pretty killer artwork.
Those who have been following OSV since it’s inception may recall one of our first posts about the Lord of Vermilion soundtrack. I was mighty proud of the image I created for that post, so be sure to check it out. Anyway, wappa at Dog Ear Records has announced that the soundtrack will finally go on sale on January 1, 2009 in Japan, and they’ve even launched an official website for the album complete with samples.
The Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack will feature 22 new compositons by Nobuo Uematsu, and the 7 samples seem to indicate they will mostly be adrenaline-pumping rock tracks with some catchy melodies. I particularly enjoy the “Majou” sample with its epic progression and the galloping percussion in “Saigo.” This definitely sounds like some great stuff.

Lord of Vermilion is Square Enix’s new arcade beat-‘em-up that just launched in Japan, and the good folks over at composer Nobuo Uematsu’s label, Dog Ear Records, were kind enough to point their English-speaking audience to the official Lord of Vermilion website for samples of the game’s music. Foreboding bell tolls, wailing guitars, thumping percussion, and a solid melody… what more could you want?
We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for an announcement regarding a soundtrack release for the title. I think chances of this arcade title coming to the United States are slim, but maybe we’ll see a console port. Is anyone else as jazzed about a potential soundtrack release for this title as I am?
