  The school of Hans Zimmer – otherwise known as Remote Control Productions – has slowly but surely permeated its way into the world of game music. Starting with the great Harry Gregson-Williams’ score for 2001’s smash hit, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, others have joined the frey, including the anointed king of film scores, Hans Zimmer (most recently on Modern Warfare 2). Entering the tussle is Ramin Djawadi, composer of Prison Break.

  Does Medal of Honor retain a similar production sound to Remote Control Productions’ otherworks? You betcha. Despite this, does Djawadi change the music formula? You betcha. Is this a good thing? Read on as I dissect Djawadi’s pulse-pounding score… (more…)

  Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands saw its soundtrack released today on iTunes. Composed by Penka Kouneva (Angels and Demons, Transformers 2) and Steve Jablonsky (Transformers, Transformers 2, Gears of War), this score brings all one would expect from a Steve Jablonsky effort and is definitely worth a listen.

  Despite being released the same week as the feature film, this is not an adaptation in game or in music. The film was scored by Harry Gregson-Williams.

  It was only a matter of time before the great film composer, Hans Zimmer, decided to get involved with game music. After all, video game composers have been imitating his style for years. If not Zimmer’s scores directly, then the works of other members of his Remote Control Productions team (i.e. Steve Jablonsky, James Dooley, Geoff Zanelli, Harry Gregson-Williams, Mark Mancina, John Van Tongeren and John Powell).

  We all know Zimmer’s body of work. Whether it be the recent Batman films or the early Bruckheimer films like The Rock or Crimson Tide, we know he can score the pants off of films.   I guess electronic music doesn’t immediately come to mind when you think about nerdy music, but I’m rather nerdy, and I enjoy electronic music, and I know a lot of nerds who are really into it. While I’ve been a fan of Hybrid for quite some time, their 2008 Sound-System_01 release caught my attention as a 2-disc remix album of film and commercial electronic music.

  The first disc pays tribute to film composers such as Harry-Gregson Williams, who you should know from his work on the Metal Gear Solid series, as well as tracks from Babel, 28 Days Later, and Kingdom of Heaven. The second disc is a more traditional electronic experience with remixes of top electronic acts like Sasha, Quivver, and Long Range. Needless to say, it’s an interesting piece of work and definitely something to look into if you’re a fan.

  I’ll come right out and say I haven’t played MGS4. In fact, I just found out today via wikipedia that the game doesn’t take place in the distant future, as I thought the fact that Snake had aged so much was because the setting of the game. Oops! That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the music though.

  We’ve been talking a lot about some of the composers behind Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but we never got around to publishing a review of the game’s 2-disc soundtrack. That ends today! We’ve listened to the thing countless times through, and although it’s a monster of a soundtrack, we’re going to try our best to avoid writing a novel about it.

  Composed by a massive team headed by film composer Harry Gregson-Williams along with Konami’s Nobuko Toda, Shuichi Kobori, Kazuma Jinnouchi, Sota Fujimori, Akihiro Honda, and of course our friends at GEM Impact, Norihiko Hibino, Yoshitaka Suzuki, Takahiro Izutani, and Takehide Ayuzawa (as an uncredited arranger), it’s a miracle that any of this music fits together, but it does! It’s time for some gritty, war-time ambiance, so brace yourself for a unique listening experience.
