Have you ever heard a piece of video game music that triggered something inside you? An emotional reaction? A cherished memory? I have. In this week’s mini-feature I discuss two pieces of music that when played by a symphony orchestra had an big impact on me. The music of Chrono Cross, and Fantasy Zone.
Yeah, it was almost a year ago that we let you know that Hiroyuki Nakayama and Masato Kouda were joining original ‘PiA-COMer’ Keita Egusa for the follow-up album. PiA-COM II features not only more performers, but more music from a more diverse set of games, and having been a fan of the first album, I couldn’t be more excited by this prospect.
So, how did this experiment pay off? Did the addition of new members affect the cohesiveness of the album, and did they pick music from games that you actually want to hear?

Yes, we have more classic SEGA music, but rather than going back to the Genesis or even the Master System which SEGA is most known for, SEGA has decided to pay homage to one their early arcade boards, the System 16, with a new collection of music.
Classic game music from SEGA is nothing new, but as a Nintendo kid growing up, I missed out on a lot of the early SEGA games, and even more so never enjoyed them in arcade form. While I won’t claim to be the biggest fan of the Fantasy Zone series, I do have fond memories of the Tengen version of Fantasy Zone for the NES. I never owned it, but I rented it several times from the local game store and loved the quirky visuals, the amazing gameplay, and of course, the upbeat music.
Even though I didn’t play the other games in the series, I was just as excited as anybody when SEGA announced their Ultra Super Big Maximum Great Strong Complete Album (what a great name) that came out last year as a part of the retromazing Sound Shock Series. It’s super cool that SEGA put this together, and I’ll tell you right now it’s a pretty exhaustive collection spanning 4 discs. And yes, there’s even a new live arrangement that you’re probably going to love!
