GENKI ROCKETS Release ‘make.believe / Flow (Child of Eden Mix) EP’

I’m a huge fan of the GENKI ROCKETS. You may know them for their track, “Heavenly Stars,” which was featured in LUMINES II and No More Heroes. While much of the talent behind the group remains a mystery, Tetsuya Mizuguchi at Q Entertainment and Kenji Tamai of Agehasprings Corporation are known to be involved.

When we first saw Child of Eden at Ubisoft’s press conference at E3 2010, I thought I was hearing the distinctive voice of Lumi, the group’s fictional vocalist. I was right, and here’s an EP that celebrates GENKI ROCKETS’s contributions to the game as well as an additional track that was used as a promotion for Sony’s “make.believe” brand slogan campaign.

Six Surefire, Face-Melting Missiles: Metroid Metal’s Expansion Pack (Review)

I was having a nice, quiet, peaceful day, when all of a sudden, Metroid Metal decides to drop a 6-track EP on the VGM community. In 0.28 seconds, my face was officially melted. Third degree burns EVERYWHERE. It was a mess of hyperbolic proportions. Because, you know, I tend to dwell in the realm of hyperbole.

We at OSV have talked about Metroid Metal before: album reviews and a concert report, to be specific. We’re kinda sorta into them, because they happen to be amazing performers. You’ve never, ever heard Metroid music quite like this.

The Expansion Pack EP is set for physical and digital release on September 4th, 2010. We got our hands on the full 6-track mayhem ahead of time so we could tell you about it. The details come after the jump. (more…)

In The White Room… With Dan “Prozax” Orosz

Dan Orosz is most well known as one of the guitar virtuosos in The Smash Brothers, the video game dream team cover band consisting of Jake “virt” Kaufman, Kunal Majmudar, George “norg” Nowik, Sean “Ailsean” Stone, Jason “Midee” Zaffary and Orosz himself performing under the pseudonym Prozax. Over the years that he been part of this band he has also been working on and off on his original works without ever reaching to a product he felt worthy of an official release. After a short stint last year with live band Orosz which performed locally in his home town of New Jersey, the inspiration and confidence for a EP release finally came and on the 15th of July it is finally ready for release. Coincidentally this is also Orosz birthday.

In The White Room... EP is the first official EP release from Dan Orosz and contains 4 original songs in the style of Dream Theater and British prog rockers IQ. The songs were written over the course of 2 years and is released digitally only at Bandcamp making it a very attractive deal. The mixing was done by Midee and the artwork was done by Dwelling of Duels resident art provider Nate Horsfall. The EP retails at 5 USD so be sure to go to Dan Orosz’s Bandcamp and check it out!

SAWA’s Figure and Shadow: a Shadow of an Album (Review)

I’ll admit I wasn’t really wowed by SAWA’s musical efforts on Square Enix’s Action RPG The World Ends With You. For some reason, it didn’t have the kind of impact that would get me to sit up and take notice. Patrick Gann’s review of their full-length album 333 called SAWA’s music “a sort of J-trash-rock sound” and that’s probably the best way to describe their music. He also goes on to say that their EP, Figure and Shadow is a step up from 333.

That, of course, is a strict comparison since I’ll be looking at Figure and Shadow without having had the benefit of listening to 333. And I’m not particularly impressed with I hear in this EP. Hit the jump to find out why. (more…)

Smashing Crispy Goodness: Bacon EP Available For Free

The Smash Bros, the dream team arrangement band with often not so dreamlike output, released Bacon EP at MAGFest 7 to great response. The CD had outstanding production values, clever arrangements and a good mix of fan favorites to satisfy most game music fans out there. Plus, it was one of my top 5 doujin / arrangement projects of 2009 last week. The release was limited in its run along side virt’s Kwakfest album, and over time the pressing ran out, and now it’s finally sold out.

But fear not if you haven’t gotten your hands on it, ’cause the Smash Bros have decided to release the EP for free on their website, and on top of that, they threw in a new bonus track as well! For the convenient price FREE, you can now hear Midee, Prozax, Norg, Ailsean and virt tear through classics such as Life Force, Earthbound, Final Fantasy, Castlevania and Actraiser. I used to walk my dog to this CD and it made simple trips to the park as epic as an afternoon dump after Taco Bell and donuts, a deadly combination I know all too well.

Beatdrop Releases Sizzling New EP: Burn Out (Review)

In the midst of his busy life sipping Mai Tais and wooing the local Hawaiian females, Dain Olsen (aka Beatdrop) still manages to find the time to compose and produce music. And quite a lot of it, in fact, with four full studio albums under his belt so far, not to mention the dozens of video game music remixes posted on sites such as OverClocked ReMix.

His latest release and first EP features the title track “Burn Out,” a single from his upcoming album Revolution as well as a playable song in the recently released Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3 for Xbox 360. Also in the package are 2 remixes of the track, 2 covers of other popular artists, and a B-side.
