  Oh, hey, look: ANOTHER Final Fantasy soundtrack. What’s on offer this time? Battle themes, world themes, melodramatic moment themes, menu themes, and that obligatory choral end-boss world-in-crisis disasterpiece. Ho-hum.

  I’ve made it clear in the past that I am over Final Fantasy music for the most part, so if you read the above with some shred of sincerity, you are absolutely forgiven. But then comes the question: why would I review not only a Final Fantasy soundtrack but one that is inevitably going to be a rehash of old themes? Why would I almost beg Jayson to give me this review just so that I could get my grubby little paws on the music a week or two before release?

  …Because there’s always a chance this album would be the rare, beautiful butterfly for which my eager pins have been waiting. Want to see me mutilate the latest from the world’s most enduring series of game music? You know what to do. (more…)

  Here we go again! The release of the Dissidia 012 Duodecism Final Fantasy soundtrack is on the horizon, and fans looking to pick up the soundtrack on March 2 have a lot to consider. There are two versions of the soundtrack being released, just as with the first Dissidia game, with drastic differences between the regular and limited editions. Not only is there an extra DVD that comes with the limited edition, but the fancy display case is quite a site to behold.

  Well, we hope this unboxing video helps you decide which one to pre-order and pick it up if you’re on the market for this soundtrack. Both sets are nice, but of course the limited edition takes the cake. Wes will provide his review of the soundtrack itself tomorrow, but in the mean time, feel free to gape at the lovely limited edition, and get your pre-orders in for whichever set you prefer ahead of the release this week. It’s available from CD Japan (Limited Edition, Regular Edition) and Play-Asia (Limited Edition, Regular Edition).

  I had the chance to drop by the Square Enix booth for some one-on-one time with a few of their upcoming titles. I loved how they provided headphones for most of the games on the floor, allowing you to fully experience the music and voice acting that they clearly worked hard on.

  Dissidia: Final Fantasy featured the newly recorded English voice cast, and sure enough the acting is top notch. Not once did it feel forced or out of place. The music–if you haven’t heard–is absolutely stunning and thankfully the PSP does a wonderful job providing quality sound output.  I thought the controls were definitely interesting. I expected it to be a fighting game but having heard that it actually played like an action RPG, in the same vein as Crisis Core, I didn’t know what to expect. Sure enough, Crisis Core was a great way to describe the game. It’s similar, at least in the freedom of movement, but with the ability to jump, and with a number of different commands available.

  Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers was up next, and the music fits the game perfectly. I had a lot of fun with the mini-games it provides, and the cut scenes are quite beautiful for a Wii game. The exploration gameplay was lacking a tad, but probably only due to the non-implimented text, making conversation with townfolk impossible with the demo on the floor. Still, I can’t wait to get the game as it was quite fun and definitely different than your typical Final Fantasy title.

  Call me behind the times, but I never realized Square Enix had put out so many music samplers and promo discs at their various events over the years. The annual Square Enix Party events and recent Tokyo Game Shows have each featured their own unique collections of music given to attendees as a preview of upcoming soundtrack releases from Square Enix.

  So, what did they have in store for fans at the Tokyo Game Show this year? The Square Enix Music Sampler CD Vol. 3 of course, featuring music from both released and unreleased titles from the Square Enix catalogue. While the packaging isn’t as elaborate as the Square Enix Party 2007 CD (awesome!), the collection of six tunes do get me excited about a couple of Square Enix’s upcoming albums.
