  It’s finally arrived. Jeremy Soule’s Skyrim soundtrack has easily been one of my most anticipated soundtracks of the year after seeing and hearing it in action at E3, and while I admit that I’ve been a naughty boy and have yet to play the game (I was trying to jam through Skyward Sword and have just wrapped up Dark Souls), I’ve been enjoying the hell out of the soundtrack.

  The Soule brothers gained a lot of attention with their scores for Morrowind and Oblivion, so how does Skyrim stack up? That comparison is hardly even fair, but I won’t spoil too much before the jump.

  Here it is! I know people have been waiting a long time for their Skyrim soundtracks to arrive, but rest assured that they are on their way to you. We have an unboxing video here to show those who passed on the opportunity to pick this one up just what they’re missing as well as to show those who are patiently waiting what they can expect when it arrives. We know that Jeremy Soule is sifting through thousands of orders as we speak, signing away as he’s promised to sign every copy ordered before December 23, 2011 (you’ll see his signature in the above video as well).

  Check out the above video and let us know what you think of the packaging and the game’s music.  Are you intrigued by the fourth disc’s tracklist containing only one track titled “Skyrim Atmospheres?” Find out what this is all about in our review that will hit the site tomorrow morning!

  Oh, and for those who are curious, the track playing in the background is “Far Horizons,” one of my favorite themes from the game.

  We were recently impressed with Jeremy Soule’s new direction with Order of War last month, but I admit that my favorite works of his are still Morrowind, Oblivion, and Guild Wars: Eye of the North. In that sense, his score for IL-2 Sturmovik really hits the spot, coming as a compromise between epic fantasy and that “World War II sound” that has become all too common with seemingly endless stream of games that focuses on that particular war.

  What exactly does that mean? Well, there are sweeping moments that sound like they’re out of Oblivion or Morrowind, intense action cues, and even true “classical” moments like those heard in Eye of the North, but all of these are experienced through the distinct lens of World War II. As impressed as I was with the new direction in Order of War, I’m even more impressed with IL-2 Sturmovik for being downright great with amazing melodies, atmospheres, and true hints of classical music that I think are missing from games. I think I have a new favorite release from DirectSong with this one.

  Well, here we are with Jeremy Soule’s triumphant return to Square Enix. I suppose it’s not in the way that any of us would have expected, but hey, we’ll take what we can get. For those who are totally out of the loop (and I don’t blame you), Order of War is Square Enix’s upcoming World War II RTS title for the PC. With that in mind, you’re not going to hear your typical Jeremy Soule RPG score here.

  What you are going to hear is tense World War II action from start to finish. Jeremy Soule plays the part perfectly, which is surprising in that we haven’t heard this sound from him before, but unsurprising because he is an amazingly talented composer who has seemingly been type-casted for scoring RPG scores despite his versatility. Bombastic orchestral volleys and tense instrumental interludes will provide no safe haven this time around, as you’re in for some of Jeremy Soule’s most intense work to date.
