This is going to be a no frills, no *jump* mini-review.
Techtonic Games’ freshman release, Bust-n-Rush, caught my attention a few months back. Available via Gamersgate for a few dollars, I thought it was worth a try. Its soundtrack could be included in mp3 format for an additional dollar, and it’s also available separately. So I thought I’d take a moment to mention this soundtrack.
Composed by up-and-comer Catherine Arthur, this mini-soundtrack is wholly tonal in scope and techno-rock in genre, but what impressed me most about it was the hand-crafted percussion. Everything from complex drum fills to catchy synthesized percussion loops can be found throughout the 15-minute-ish soundtrack.
So we have another aspiring composer to watch for. Catherine also notes her role in the IGF-submitted game Communists vs Zombies as both lead audio design and composer. So between this and the seemingly low-profile release of Bust-n-Rush, we have something worth talking about. In the meantime, be sure to check out the soundtrack for BnR. It’s fairly low-budget demoscene-ish music, but again, the drum work caught my ears as particularly noteworthy.
