It’s the true sign of growing up, the day you see that a game character that you grew up so affectionately enjoying is celebrating its anniversary. For Europeans and South Americans, Mario had some stiff competition as the most popular mascot in the video game world, and that competition wasn’t in the form of a blue colored hedgehog or my cat wearing a funny hat and sunglasses. Rather, the hero for the cool kids down on the block was Alex Kidd, SEGA’s giant fisted rug racker. You see, even before the Battletoads came to be with their oversized hands and lightning fast transportation vehicles, Alex Kidd had already driven by on his BMX bike and punched the bad guys with his large hands, and you know what they say about guys with large hands.
In 2011, its the 25th anniversary for Alex’s greatest adventure, Alex Kidd In Miracle World, and the celebrations and rejoice can be heard loudly…if you live some miles outside Sao Paulo, Brazil. There, a young Brazilian guitarist named tibone decided to celebrate his greatest inspiration, and do so with the release of an EP covering the soundtrack in hard rock fashion. The EP is luckily available worldwide for everyone to participate in the festivities and sing the “Alex Kidd Song” along with tibone as he rock, scissor and papers his way through the classic soundtrack. The album is available at Bandcamp for only $2.99.
