About 5 years ago, the folks over at the Chiptunes = WIN group decided to invert their process by taking previously-make chiptune tracks and having artists cover them with live instrumentation. Called Chiptunes = WTFLOL, the album was a six-track EP and was a nice deviation from their previous format.

Fast-forward to today, and those same folks have released an entire album in the same format, featuring 11 tracks from some of the top names in the VGM community. Chips = FLIPPED takes the same process of re-arranging previously released chiptunes and doing them them up with live instruments. Featuring artists such as DJ Cutman, Grant “Stemage” Henry & Erik “Viking Guitar” Peabody, and even big names in the chip and game music industry such a Makeup & Vanity Set and Machinae Supremacy, the Chips = FLIPPED album brings out some pretty big guns.

It only took 5 years to crank out a full length sequel to the original ‘WTFLOL’ EP. Worth the wait? You damn well better believe it! #FlipIt (╯°□°)╯︵ ♪♫♬

Super Guitar Bros. Release Ocarina of Time Cover Album

The acoustic duo of Sam and Steve that make up the Super Guitar Bros. have finally released their album covering the majority of the soundtrack from the classic Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Hinted at both over their Twitch stream and at last year’s MAG Underground show, the finishing touches were put together on the album and it first debuted in its entirety on the main stage at this past MAGFest last month.

Titled simple Ocarina of Time, the album covers 25 tracks from game’s original music, all done in acoustic guitar and touches on all of the classic tunes from the game, including “Song of Storms”, “Gerudo Valley” and “Kakoriko Village”.

Pre-sales of the album were available at MAGFest, but the album is now live to purchase either as a digital album or as a physical CD on the duo’s Bandcamp.

Scarlet Moon Records, Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid) and AYAKI (Eterian Odyssey) are at it again with yet another Prescription for Sleep: Game Music Lullabies. After producing several albums based around video game music to help sooth you into relaxation, the team now brings it’s newest iteration: Fight for your Dreams.

Fight for your Dreams centers itself around battle themes and boss music from both video games and other popular media, all spun into a jazzy and smooth sequence of music tracks that will help ease your tension for the rigors of every-day life. Battle Themes from Undertale, Mega Man 2, Super Metroid and more are given the GENTLE LOVE touch of Hibino and AYAKI.

I’ve been wanting to create a volume dedicated to battle music for quite some time. I’ve been trying to increase the challenge factor with each installment of the series, and what better way to challenge Hibino-san and AYAKI than by taking some of the most intense music from videogames and having them transformed into lullabies? Here’s a fun little treat to close out your holiday week. Grant “Stemage” Henry of Metroid Metal and Viking Guitar Live renown has decided to take some of the most iconic tunes from the NES library and literally spins them in reverse with RETROGRESSION VOL.1. The resulting reversed tracks prove that the musical library of many NES games, such as Super Mario Bros. and Punch Out! are just as amazing backwards as they are forwards.

Henry proves the legitimacy of his retro reversals by also releasing the tracks themselves reversed into their original compositions in order to hear exactly how on-the-mark he hits with the backwards transcriptions.

Twenty producers, DJs, and emcees from Richmond, Virginia are excited to present a collaborative hip-hop tribute charity album featuring the iconic melodies from Street Fighter II. Street Fighter: The RVA Warrior has been released to benefit Richmond-based Building a Better RPS charitable organization to benefit public schools in the area and includes radio host Black Liquid, members of Gritty City Records, DJs Phil Dice, 8-Bit Mullet, and Dope Solo/Sultans, a co-founder of the Party Liberation Front and more.

I was excited to receive so much interest once I shared the concept with the collaborators. It’s been a great way to connect with other artists, support a good cause, and have fun re-living a game that each of us grew up loving despite our different backgrounds. – Alan “8-Bit Mullet” Brymer

The show, which will also be streamed live on Twitch, will include a Street Fighter II tournament, costume contest, and live art by Amy Black, a prominent tattoo artist. The Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary Concert Album Now Available

If you were waiting for the release of the Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary Concert to come out to CD, wait no longer. Both the regular and limited edition of the tribute to 30 years of The Legend of Zelda releases today.

Recorded live this past October at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Theater by The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Taizo Takemoto (Press Start – Symphony of Games-), the 14-track album captures the musical essence of the Zelda games, featuring several classic tracks performed along with music from Wind Waker, Ocarina, Link Between Worlds, Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess, with an encore of the Breath of the Wild theme.

The audio import of the album can now be purchased by several retailers in both the regular and limited edition (shown above), including Amazon and CDJapan.

The fine folks of Materia Collective present The Travelers, a supergroup of some of the most passionate performers and arrangers seeking to bring a unique acoustic experience unlike anything before. The Travelers cover VGM favorites and obscure selections in European folk arrangements of various styles from Celtic, Nordic, and Slavic traditions. Their membership includes players of a broad variety of instruments from many different parts of the world, featuring members from the Materia Collective, Triforce Quartet, and Tetrimino.

Produced by Josh Barron and Masha Lepire with art by Val Choung, The Travelers album features arrangements from Final Fantasy X, Shadow Hearts 2, Romancing SaGa 2 and more. For those who love Yasunori Mitsuda’s “Millennial Fair” and his Xenogears CREID album you will be treated to something that embraces the source yet presents something fresh in a live acoustic setting.
