Among the more overlooked aspects of game development from the common fan is that of sound design. Although we know that so many people choose to play their games blaring their own music or blathering to friends, there are still a great many of us who choose to take in the game’s ideal presentation with good, quality sound and music. Here at OSV, these unsung heroes of the gaming world who slave to create the perfect sound effect and music cease to go unrecognized!
Read on to find out the nominees for Best Sound Design of 2012!
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
“Speed boats on the Hudson, classic weaponry, futuristic weaponry, nuclear explosions, shattering glass at every corner, top-notch voice acting. No big deal, right?”
Far Cry 3
“Your brother and friends are being held captive by a lunatic. Traverse every kind of terrain skinning various forms of life (including sharks) while riding nearly every mode of transportation imaginable. Oh, and use over thirty different kinds of weapons. Bravo, Ubisoft.”
Gravity Rush
“What does gravity sound like? How about stasis? And several dozen monsters? Do you know? Sony does.”
Halo 4
“Building on an iconic universe, both visual and aural, 343 Studios had its hands full. Retaining the important and essential sounds to the series, reinventing the gun sounds, as well as adding a whole new race to the canon, the studio was up to the challenge!”
Journey
“Feel the sand, the wind, the water. Listen to Austin Wintory’s Grammy-nominated score. And, lastly, sometimes knowing when not to speak is the best sound design choice of all.”
The Darkness II
“The Darklings are back. With them comes a fantastic score by Timothy Wynn, gruesome dismemberment noises, as well as some of the best voice acting of the year. This underrated gem can stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the big boys.”
