I actually think this is kind of old news, but interesting nonetheless. I sort of missed the big hubbub until a post about the topic resurfaced on Soundtrack Central, but apparently Namco Bandai composer Kennosuke Suemura recently “borrowed” the melodies from “Battle with Magus” from Chrono Trigger and “The One Who Will Save The Earth” from Lufia II for his recent Super Robot Taisen series soundtrack.
Worse, this isn’t the first time this has happened. The same composer was supposedly involved in a similar incident involving music from Warcraft II when working on a previous title in the series. Namco Bandai has since released a formal apology and paid a settlement to resolve the issue, but it’s kind of funny that the composer went after Square Enix and Blizzard Entertainment, two of the most vigilant companies when it comes to cracking down on unauthorized use of their property.
What do you think? The series has always been known for combining elements from all kinds of different games, but did Suemura go too far this time?

The main part of the song that he repeats alot, to be frank, isn’t much of a problem, but he could at least not steal every part of the song. Yoko Kanno for instance often takes stuff from other themes or songs in general, enough for someone attentive to notice. But it truly doesn’t matter when you shape it to be your own. However this? I wonder why this composer has not been fired and blacklisted everywhere yet.
“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different”. ~ T. S. Eliot
Haha, Go Kennosuke Suemura, go! Kennosuke ftw!
[…] or were people just blindly calling him out? No, I’m pretty sure he stole these melodies. Original Sound Version linked us to a video which you’ll find below the jump. It plays the songs in question, […]
[…] Unfortunately, that’s the situation that Namco Bandai composer Kennosuke Suemora is being accused of. Word is that Mr. Suemora ‘borrowed’ a track from Chrono Trigger for the Super Robot Taisen series soundtrack. He’s also being accused of stealing songs from other titles as well. Worst of all, Mr. Suemora was involved in a settlement in the past for…music copyright infringement. With that said, check out the video below to see if you hear any audio similarities. That’s what you get for ripping off the theme song for a B.A.M.F. like Magus.

Being a composer myself, this makes me violently ill. People like this should be locked away. I agree with Pierre-Oliver up there, about making things your own. Just don’t blatantly rip the whole melody or chord progression. C’mon people.
