So, watch the above video. It’s painful, but kind of funny. Microsoft seems to think that this “adaptable” program that creates a musical backing to whatever melody you sing will actually be easy to use and enjoyable to listen to. Let me tell you, after watching this, I tried singing some random, mundane things to myself in the car, and it’s hard to come up with a catchy vocal melody on the fly. There’s no way this is going to work for 99% of the population.
I guess Dale would be the best one to chime in on this one. I don’t sing, and I don’t record vocalists, but I don’t see how this could work. It looks like a cool tool for people who create jingles like the guy in the video, as it’s a quick way to go about creating a mock-up, but other than that, it looks like a toy for kids to annoy their parents with.
Do you see potential in Microsoft’s Songsmith software? Can you imagine the horrible off-key songs that people are going to be making with this?

The problem with the software is that it’s creating trite, pathetic chord progressions for your melody. See the countless YouTube videos of popular songs run through Songsmith (such as Radiohead’s “Creep”). It’s just plain stupid. The last thing we need in our world is uninspired music, and that’s exactly what you get through Songsmith.
I agree with Patrick. If you really want to sing that badly, go out for some terrible karaoke. No need for Songsmith.
Oh, and if you want to see something far more interesting from Microsoft, the “2019” vid is excellent.

Not that I suspect any of it will be going down ten years from now, but we’ll see. Also, the music in this trailer is good. 🙂
I think I am in agreement with Patrick. But if people want a replacement for the Karaoke, then what the heck. Knock yourself out. I have problems watching the videos atm, but I suspect I won’t turn into a fan, from what I’ve read this far. 😉
