I’m not kidding, these guys weigh a combined 1250lb. They didn’t allow any in the band who was under 220lb, and the result is both funny and awesome. The first Devparade press release I received from Sony Music was riddled with stories about how the band couldn’t fit into elevators and restaurants, etc. I guess I’m allowed to laugh at fat jokes since I’m not too far away from that 220lb figure!

Anyway, while Devparade is just getting started, they’ve already had their second single, “Bacchikoi!!!,” featured as the closing theme for the eighth season of Naruto. Things are definitely looking up for the group. While the single itself is only available for import from Japan, both songs featured on the CD release will be hitting iTunes on February 17.

If you’re thinking you may want to pick up the single or the iTunes tracks, feel free to check out our impressions after the jump.

First off, I loved Devparade’s debut single, “Body & Soul.” It was funky, catchy, and fun in part due to the different yet complementary singing styles of Devparade’s two vocalists. One (in yellow) raps in a gruff, playful voice, while the other (red) sort of scream-talks in a high pitched voice. Sounds wacky, but hey, isn’t the hole premise of the band a little odd?

There are only two tracks here, starting with “Bacchikoi!!!” itself. Taking a different direction from their funky first outing, “Bacchikoi!!!” is a thumping rock track that still retains the playfulness that seems to be as much a part of the band as their extra poundage. The vocals are fast-paced, and the the insanely catchy “Bacchikoi, bacchikoi baby!” phrase comes in during the chorus along with some groovy synth lines. The octave-jumping slap bass and rockin’ electric guitar (with an impressive solo) do their jobs, and impart a sense of rockin’ ninja action. The blast of percussion and vocals that close out the song are a fitting end to such an energetic track.

Next, “GODS ‘N’ DEATH” provides a more traditional rock experience, with chugging guitars and screaming rock vocals. I guess the occasional rap phrase adds something new to the classic rock formula, but you’re basically looking at classic rock music any way you look at it.  I personally find this track enjoyable although it’s somewhat tame in comparison to the unique sound and shenanigans of their other work.

I recommend checking out the “Bacchikoi!!!” single if you’re a fan of Naruto. I also suggest looking into their “Body & Soul” single that was released last year. You can grab both “Bacchikoi!!!” and “GODS ‘N’ DEATH” on iTunes on February 17.

Have you heard Devparade’s music in Naruto? What are you thoughts regarding the band’s “fat guy” premise?
