While there was no mention of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s soundtrack at this morning’s press conference, Nintendo held an evening panel featuring Shigeru Miyamoto, Eiji Aonuma, and 3DS team lead Hideki Kondo to cover some of this morning’s titles in more depth and to offer up a brief Q&A session.
The biggest thing to come out of this panel for us here was news about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s soundtrack, and it wasn’t even a question from OSV! Find out what Miyamoto had to say about the game’s soundtrack that makes it appear likely that the game will feature at least some live orchestra.

Miyamoto received a question from an audience member who noted the high production values for both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M. He asked if, based on these high production values, we’d being hearing orchestration in Skyward Sword.
Miyamoto noted that while Koji Kondo has been pushing for an orchestral recording, it’s usually Miyamoto himself who ends up shooting the idea down. He followed this by explaining that since Super Mario Galaxy 2 received the live orchestral treatment, it wouldn’t be fair to the team if he denied them the privilege. Even more, he stated that Nintendo recently hired a number of orchestrators who are eager to work on the Zelda franchise.
With new staff in the music department who are ready for the task and the issue of fairness at hand, I hope this is enough to persuade Miyamoto to allow live recordings to commence. They’re really long overdue for the series.
Oh, and by the way, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D exists.
Do you think past Zelda soundtracks suffered from the lack of a live orchestra? And are you with me in wondering who else is involved with the game’s soundtrack aside from Koji Kondo?

My hope is that more thought and care is lavished on the soundtrack, consequence of this desire to implement orchestrated tunes. I’m doubtful, sadly, that Kondo is going to have much influence on this, mind; it’ll likely be headed by Toru Minegishi, in keeping with recent games. I’d say the Spirit Tracks sound team will impart a lot of influence on this. (Though I’d much rather Kondo did it himself.)
