Okay, while this video is a bit old, I was just reminded by the Warhammer Online team at the EA Mythic booth today that portions of Brad Derrick’s score were composed with a Casio keyboard on his lap during his hour-long commute to work. EA Mythic was even kind enough to record the dangerous but amazingly epic feat for your viewing pleasure.
Interestingly enough, this is Derrick’s first shot at scoring a project at EA Mythic despite his close to 15 years of experience working in audio for the studio. I’ve been enjoying the melodic fantasy music that I’ve heard in the game’s trailers, so I’m excited to see if his potentially fatal work has paid off.
Hit the jump for details about the soundtrack for this highly anticipated MMO.
So, if the soundtrack was not already epic enough, Derrick’s Casio creations have actually been completely orchestrated by Andy Brick, who some may know from his work on video game music concerts. Over 90 minutes of music was performed and recorded with the Czech Republic Philharmonic, ensuring a soundtrack of epic proportions.
This project actually required EA Mythic to double their audio staff from one member to two members, with Derrick acting as audio director, being responsible for composition as well as implementation and many other audio tasks, and newcomer Matt Conway as an audio engineer. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing if this unique work environment is conducive to creating great music.
Regarding the availability of the soundtrack, it has been confirmed that it will indeed be released. I was told it will be a “collector’s item,” but will not be included in the game’s collector’s edition. Perhaps this is simply code for, “we’re doing a small run.” All the more reason to pick it up when it becomes available! The soundtrack should be released in both a physical format and through iTunes for those who aren’t able to get their hands on a physical copy.
So, has anyone tried something similar to this at home and lived to tell the tale? Are you looking forward to hearing how the audio turned out?
