You’ve likely heard that Square Enix is porting Chrono Trigger to the DS. Well, 1UP published the news today that Yasunori Mitsuda has confirmed via an interview with Famitsu that he is involved as the title’s sound director. While this is very exciting news, I think most fans were expecting the typical “musical enhancement” that has admittedly been pretty hit-or-miss with recent Square remakes. However, Mitsuda had this to say about the musical direction for the title: “I had the music for the Nintendo DS version stay as close as possible to the SNES original, so I think you’ll like how it turns out.”
If it sounds anything like the original, I’ll certainly like how it turns out. Chrono Trigger is my favorite score by Mitsuda, but I know this news may disappoint those who were hoping for an updated soundtrack. I think this approach at least ensures that Chrono Trigger DS will not go the route of the upcoming Final Fantasy IV remake whose “enhanced soundtrack” actually made me cringe at times.
Do you think this is the way to go? Are you disappointed that the game isn’t going to feature a fully revamped soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda?

I thought the DS version of FF4 was a poor upgrade myself. It didn’t sound great on its own, and it lost the charm of the SNES version. I was disappointed because Junya Nakano worked on it, but it didn’t come close to his typically high quality or distinctive sound.
