On March 14, 2018, composer Austin Wintory (Journey, The Banner Saga Trilogy, and Abzu), revealed at last the Kickstarter project he has been teasing on Twitter for some time. The project is called A Light in the Void and is described as the first-of-its-kind. A live concert experience meant to inspire and sustain a life-long love affair with science through the emotional power of music and storytelling. You can view the video detailing the project below:
A Light in the Void tells the story of science itself through sweeping cinematic music, real-life scientists speaking on-stage (accompanied by the orchestra!), and wildly entertaining theatrics, video packages, and animations… all performed LIVE and broadcast globally for the entire world to experience. To put it simply: amazing scientists tell unforgettable stories in an audio/visual spectacular! Our goal is singular: elicit the profound, life-affirming joy of scientific discovery. This isn’t a show about teaching nifty science trivia … it’s about enriching life itself.
Austin Wintory will compose the music for the event which will feature three acts delivered live on-stage (with full orchestral score) by three of the world’s greatest living scientists.
You can read more and back the project over on its Kickstarter page. Check it out, for music and science’s sake!
We recently interviewed composer Lena Raine who shared details on her work on the Celeste soundtrack, the Celeste: B-Sides album, and her EP Singularity which she released under the name Kuraine. On February 12, 2018, via twitter Ship to Shore PhonoCo. announced physical releases for these titles:
So excited to announce that we’re working with @kuraine on two wonderful projects. The fantastic OST to @celeste_game and her absolute banger of a solo album Singularity (with new artwork by @ang_yen). Both will be out at the same time this Spring, so get hype!
-Ship to Shore PhonoCo.
Lena Raine also shared some additional details on the release on twitter on the same date:
Celeste is a HUGE soundtrack, so we did have to make a few snips here and there to make it fit. NEARLY every track will be represented on two packed records, with a few exceptions:
“Anxiety” is one of my favourite tracks but, sadly, it didn’t fit the length & needed to get cut for the vinyl. “Quiet and Falling” needed a slightly truncated mix for the side to come in at the right length. “Reach for the Summit” was trimmed down to its final iteration for length
Singularity is being presented as a special DJ mix specifically for the vinyl that smooths tracks I & II and III & IV together into one seamless side. I needed to do it for timing purposes, but I think it’s a pretty rad interpretation of the album. I absolutely love Erica’s original cover for Singularity & it’ll remain the cover for all the digital releases, but I wanted to give the vinyl its own special treatment. The vinyl cover I feel takes the same inspiration & takes it in a unique minimalist direction for this version.
And if you’re wondering if the B-SIDES will get a vinyl release the composer says:
Not at the moment. We’ll see how things go & the option isn’t out, but we decided to keep things thematic with B-Sides & go for a cassette release for it.
Are you excited for these upcoming physical releases coming later this spring?
Zombie apocalypse games seem to be a dime a dozen these days. Even so, it’s nice when they have good music attached to them, and can even be a defining point for a genre some might consider stale.
Numatian Games studio decided to throw one such game at PC players. They Are Billions is about humans who colonized an alien planet and have to fight a zombie epidemic. A few survivors have to find a way to manage in the world occupied by the infested. To describe the events and to tell the story using music, the developers from Numatian Games decided to hire French composer Nicolas Diteriks, and will include a recording session with Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, which will add even more flavor to the soundtrack by Diteriks.
After studying composition, orchestration and arrangement at the American School of Modern Music (Paris, France) and Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA), Nicolas quickly started his career in the video-game industry, and has since worked with studios all over the world as a Composer and Music Editor. He’s since composed for Eminence: Xander’s Tales and The Vermilion Pact before working on They Are Billions, which features a dramatic score of a post-apocalyptic atmosphere tinged with a sense of hope and triumph against the undead hordes.
You can listen to the “Main Theme” of They Are Billions on Diteriks‘ personal website. The original soundtrack to They Are Billions will be releasing for purchase later this year.
Celeste is a recently released indie game from Matt Makes Games that is available on multiple platforms. The game has been getting a lot of attention for its stunning visual design, and challenging gameplay. More important to us here at OSV is the game’s soundtrack. The music was composed by Lena Raine (aka Lena Chappelle, and Kuraine), and who has been working as a composer for over 11 years.
She recently took some time to talk to us about her musical background, her inspirations, and her experience working in game audio. Read on for our full interview.
The composer of Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 has gone ahead and released a second album as a follow up to his Just Fun Kickstarter campaign in 2014. Composer Alexander Brandon has released Just Fun Custom for both kickstarter backers and for general listeners to enjoy a new crop of diverse game-inspired music.
“The second album is comprised of backer requested tracks! As the first was funded via Kickstarter the top backers each got to request a track. They also kindly allowed all the tracks to go out in a compilation, each song with its own story of what the backer wanted to hear.” – Alexander Brandon
If you check out the album on Bandcamp, each individual track has a blurb attached to it describing who requested each song and why, as well as additional details about the song’s composition. Many of the songs feature MOD files within their 8-bit compositions as well, throwing back to Brandon’s demoscene days.
Just Fun Custom was created with help from Materia Collective and features 9 tracks with a range of genres from jazz, ambient and synth-techno. I personally enjoyed “Cloudbreak” for its atmospheric ambiance. The album itself is currently available to non-backers of the Kickstarter for $5 on Bandcamp.
Back in 2014, Night Light Interactive and Akupara Games released an indie horror-adventure title on Steam called Whispering Willows. It was a beautiful little 2D games with a girl named Elena who spoke to the spirits of the dead and looking for her missing father and received favorable reviews from players. The music of the game is appropriately eerie and morose and composer Steve Goldshein makes use of piano and synth sounds to help immerse the player into the game’s macabre setting.
Now, over 3 years after the game itself was released, the official soundtrack for Whispering Willows has been released by Akapara Games and Materia Collective.
The album contains 12 tracks (one of which is a dance remix) and is currently available on Bandcamp, iTunes and several other platforms.
2017 flew by and was a very memorable year for game music, much like 2016! Personally, I am a huge film score fan, and have a deep appreciation for video game soundtracks that feature an orchestral sound. Not surprising my choice for game soundtrack of the year checked that box, as did the remaining choices on my list of runners up, and honorable mentions – except for one chip tune arrangement album. What I love about Original Sound Version’s OSVOSTOTY is that each of our contributors have different gaming experiences each year, and unique tastes in music.
Read on to see what I picked for my favorite game soundtracks of 2017.
