We recently reviewed Jon Everist’s soundtrack to Shadowrun: DRAGONFALL on Vinyl LP which you can read here if you missed it. The composer also provided OSV with a review copy of their Shadowrun: HONG KONG Vinyl LP. I first experienced this soundtrack back in 2015 and declared it a must listen, it also led me to choose Jon Everist as my pick for composer of year.
Listening to the soundtrack on vinyl for me was a new way to experience a soundtrack I fell in love with years ago. Read on for my full review of the double vinyl album, which includes a detailed look at the album art and packaging.
On May 1, 2018, long-time soundtrack producer, and creator of Film Score Monthly, Lukas Kendall launched an Indiegogo campaign to finance SKY FIGHTER a short sci-fi film. The short film will be used as a proof-of-concept for a full length feature film. Composer Ron Jones, known for his stellar video game score to the Star Trek Starfleet Academy video game, and his extensive television scores for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ducktales, and Family Guy will be handling the music for SKY FIGHTER. Personally, I’ve read the script (which you can find on the campaign page) and found it to be both engaging and intriguing.
The rewards for the campaign include a soundtrack CD to the short, and additional new music composed by Ron Jones which will be produced by La-Land Records. Many of the rewards are soundtrack related and include CDs, or coupons for discounts at many soundtrack labels including Varese Sarabande, La-La Land Records, Intrada, Buysoundtrax, and Screen Archives Entertainment. You can watch the video for the Indiegogo campaign below:
I have loved Ron’s music since the early years of Star Trek: The Next Generation. He wrote 42 episode scores for TNG, including some of the greatest episodes: “11001001,” “Heart of Glory,” “Q Who,” “Who Watches the Watchers?” and “The Best of Both Worlds” (with that incredible cliffhanger as the Enterprise faces off against Borgified Picard—”Mr. Worf…fire!”). His orchestral/synthesizer soundscapes brilliantly evoke futuristic, computer-controlled environments, which is why I want him for Sky Fighter. Ron has a new recording and audio postproduction facility north of Seattle, SkyMuse Studios, where we will do our music recording, sound design and mix.
I already have offers to package the Sky Fighter feature script with a director and actors to get it made—but I wrote it with the intention to direct it myself. So I need to make a short film version of it to prove I can direct! The project is inspired by some of my favorite worlds: Battlestar Galactica/Robotech space warfare and Ghost in the Shell/Black Mirror cyber-technology.

On June 1, 2018, Varese Sarabande will release composer’s Christopher Young’s score to Wilson’s Heart, the Oculus Rift VR game developed by Twisted Pixel. Christopher Young is known for his many horror film scores including Hellraiser, The Fly 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Drag Me to Hell, and many more. He also epically scored the first two Monkey King films which OSV has covered in the past. Varese Sarabande offers some more detail on the soundtrack below:
Wilson’s Heart is the award winning Oculus virtual reality game. This game is an immersive first-person psychological thriller set in a 1940s hospital that has undergone a haunting transformation. The player becomes Robert Wilson, a patient who awakens to the shocking discovery that his heart has been replaced with a mysterious device. The original soundtrack features a creepy, horror movie inspired score composed by Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominated composer, Christopher Young (Hellraiser, Spider-Man 3). CD and Digital hit June 1st!

Based in Montreal, L’Orchestre de Jeux Vidéo has been around since 2008. They are a non-profit organization, dedicated to video game music. I have been anticipating the soundtrack to Battletech since 2016. Jon Everist discussed his work on the score in an interview last year which you can read here if you missed it. The soundtrack will be released on April 24, 2018 coinciding with the release of the game which is also available for pre-order on Steam.
The album contains 60 tracks, featuring over 3 hours of music from Harebrained Schemes epic turn-based tactical game. You can listen to the samples below including the music from the game’s opening cinematic.
The music was performed by the Budapest Symphonic Scoring Orchestra, the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, and the Live Choir was recorded with members of the Latvian Radio Choir. The album also features solo performances by cellist Erika Kádi and vocalist Emily Ridgway.
The soundtrack is available to order directly on Jon Everist’s bandcamp page digitally for $8.99. Check back with OSV for more on Jon Everist’s music, including an upcoming review of his Shadowrun: Hong Kong soundtrack on Vinyl LP.
Are you excited for Battletech?
On February 26, 2018, Black Screen Records released the soundtracks to Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Shadowrun: Hong Kong on 180g Vinyl LP. Jon Everist composed the scores and graciously supplied OSV with signed review copies of both albums and their respective art prints. This week’s review focuses on Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and my full review of Shadowrun: Hong Kong is on the way.
Over the past few years the release of video game soundtracks on vinyl has blossomed, and some have been more disappointing the others. I am very happy to report that this release does not disappoint. Read on for my full review of the album, which includes a look at the album art and packaging as it’s an essential part of the experience.
