I was excited to receive so much interest once I shared the concept with the collaborators. It’s been a great way to connect with other artists, support a good cause, and have fun re-living a game that each of us grew up loving despite our different backgrounds. – Alan “8-Bit Mullet” Brymer

The Golden State Pops Orchestra is turning its focus back to games again with a third installment of their Video Game Soundtracks series, coming to Los Angeles on July 15th. We last covered the orchestra in 2009 when Jayson attended their second performance and in the intervening years they’ve polished up their setlist for the new show. The full list is still under wraps but some of the highlights announced so far include music from:
Some of these are returning titles from past performances but I’m always happy to see AFRIKA getting a spotlight. Chime Sharp will also be an interesting one to see performed live. Speaking of spotlights, the show will feature some new visual presentations to accompany the music and a handful of special guests and performers that will also be announced as the show draws nearer.
The GSPO’s Video Game Soundtracks performance will be held at the Los Angeles Theatre on Saturday, July 15th. Tickets go on sale June 15h and can be purchased through the orchestra’s website here. We’ll be back with more details on the show as they roll out.
On June 11, 2017, during E3, XBOX announced the sequel to the critically acclaimed Ori and the Blind Forest. The new game will be called Ori and The Will of the Wisps, and the best part is that Gareth Coker is returning to score the game. Gareth Coker was on hand for the presentation to play the piano accompaniment for the trailer too! You can watch the teaser trailer featuring his music below:
Gareth Coker has already made the teaser music available on his bandcamp site. You can listen to it here, and you can hear that both the Nashville Music Scoring Orchestra, and Aeralie Brighton whose vocals graced the first score have also returned.
The game itself looks absolutely stunning but I’m not gonna lie, I’m more excited about the music. Are you excited for Ori and the Will of the Wisps?
Seemingly just to keep the Metal Gear name kicking around, Konami has nonetheless announced a tantalizing concert performance for fans of Hideo Kojima’s long-running series. Metal Gear in Concert will be performed twice this Summer in Japan, first at the Orix Theatre in Osaka on July 30th and again at the Tokyo International Forum on August 2nd.
Each will be performed by the city’s resident orchestra (the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Osaka Symphony Orchestra) and will be conducted by Nicholas Buc. Singer/songwriter Donna Burke will also be performing which means her vocal themes from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid V will most surely be played. The full setlist hasn’t been announced yet but Burke recently recorded new versions of all the Metal Gear Solid vocal tracks so it’s possible she’ll feature heavily throughout the evening. Like most video game concerts, Metal Gear in Concert will also feature a synchronized video presentation above the players with footage from the series.
Don’t fret, Western fans! While the show is debuting exclusively in Japan, Konami mentions that plans are in the works to bring the show on tour to North America and Europe but presumably not until 2018. For those interested in attending there are more details on Konami’s site. The rest of us will just have to dig out our old albums or involuntarily start humming the “MGS Main Theme” as I’ve been doing while writing this post.

Heroes of Might and Magic, the ever-popular strategy game franchise, will be receiving it’s own live concert at The Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music in Wroclaw, Poland on October 27th and performed by the National Forum of Music choir and orchestra.
The Symphony of Heroes is organized by the team of gamemusic.pl, a European game music group dedicated to covering video game music for the past decade.
Each suite will be performed in a fully acoustic version, without amplifiers or microphones. This will be a delightful evening not only for video game aficionados, but also for all connoisseurs of illustrative music. After the main concert, attendees will get the chance to participate in a live piano recital by the composer – Paul Anthony Romero will be present during the event. The recital will also be a meet & greet session with him. – Press Release
The first suite includes music from Heroes of Might and Magic II, the second suite contains fragments of the Heroes III soundtrack, and the last suite comprises of songs heard in Heroes IV, all scored by Polish composer Jan Sanejko.

Started in 2005 in Baltimore as a small celebration of game music created by John DeCampos and Chris Baines of former VGM band Entertainment System, Bit Gen grew into a yearly local event. In 2013, it was acquired by MAGFest and became a subsidiary event of the brand, though it still remained under it’s own label.

No Man’s Sky is having a bit of a renaissance here in early 2017. More people seem to be picking it up on sale and discovering a much fuller game, closer to (though still far from) the slick E3 trailers and teasers that wowed them over the last three years. To coincide with the recent “Pathfinder” update, Laced Records and 65daysofstatic — the instrumental post/math-rock band who created the game’s soundtrack — have released an exclusive live performance music video. The video offers three tracks from the game in new arrangements that 65daysofstatic’s Paul Wolinski says won’t be heard again.
“We are in a studio environment in this video. Everything wired up to play just these specific songs. This provided an opportunity to create a system where every performance of a track would be unique. This was one of the first attempts at rethinking how to approach performing music that was written to be non-linear and lend itself to generative, infinite soundscapes rather than fixed compositions.”
He has a lot more to say about the future of musical performance — one where “the listener is as vital as the musician” — in this PlayStation UK blog post. Alongside the video release, Laced Records is running a 15% Off sale on all of their No Man’s Sky soundtrack offerings. That includes their immense 4-LP vinyl box set, 2-disc CD album and the digital version of the soundtrack.
Have a look at the performance above and check out Ryan’s review of the album here.
