Last year, arranger David Peacock and performer Augustine Mayuga Gonzales released a piano album and sheet music combination release dedicated to the game UNDERTALE and its soundtrack by Toby Fox. Released under the Materia Collective label, The UNDERTALE Piano Collections was a popular hit and received many accolades.
Now a year later, the follow-up has been released by the same artists and continues with what was started on the first album. The UNDERTALE Piano Collections 2 covers additional songs from the UNDERTALE game, as well as a new sheet music collection will be released alongside of the album for any pianists wanting to test their skills.
With this second UNDERTALE Piano Collections, the goal was to revisit the world of Undertale and cover some themes that we didn’t get to explore the first time around. As a result, the general feeling of this selection is as if exploring more of the experience and atmosphere of a ‘genocide run.’ Retaining the idea of merging both classical music and videogame arrangements, while also continuing the musical language and ideas from the first piano collections, we hope you enjoy these pieces! – David Peacock, Arranger
The UNDERTALE Piano Collections 2 is currently available digitally on Bandcamp and iTunes for $10, with the sheet music available digitally on Bandcamp for $15 and a pre-order of the physical sheet music for $25, to be produced and shipped in May.
In celebration of game composer Chis Huelsbeck’s 50th birthday on March 2nd, the artists known as the German Remix Group have put together a tribute album paying homage to the music Huelsbeck has created for games in the past 25 years.
Literally titled A Tribute to Chris Huelsbeck, the album features 19 tracks of remixes and covers of the composers work across several games he’s worked on, including Turrican, Turrican 2, The Great Giana Sisters, Jim Power and more. It even includes SID medley, which Huelsbeck created a slew of from the Commodore 64.
A Tribute to Chris Huelsbeck is currently available on Bandcamp for digital purchase at the Name-Your-Price tier and a proper nod to the history of an amazing composer.
With the recent release of the classic RPG Secret of Mana on the Playstation 4, the gang responsible for the Prescription for Sleep: Game Music Lullibies series of albums have released one of the tracks from their Lullabies of Mana album free for download.
“Memories of Mana” is an original track composed and performed by GENTLE LOVE (Norihiko Hibino on saxophone and Etrian Odyssey pianist AYAKI) that is inspired by the world and themes of Secret of Mana. It was recorded after the duo had completed work on 11 arrangements from the Secret of Mana soundtrack for the Prescription for Sleep: Lullabies of Mana album, which is currently available on iTunes, Spotify, and more.
Always nice to see extra love being thrown at the Secret of Mana music. You can nab the free track over on the GENTLE LOVE Bandcamp page.
If you’re jonsing for more music from last year’s hit game, NieR: Automata, then Argentinian musician Fernando Ariel “Ferdk” Carabajal and Materia Collective have you covered. Glory to Metal (A Symphonic Metal Tribute to NieR: Automata) is a four-track EP paying tribute to the game’s music in the most metal of ways.
“Immediately after fully completing the game, I felt the urge to do something with the music, and given its heavy orchestral work it was a perfect fit for my bombastic, symphonic metal style. Battles are always an easy choice when it comes to metal, but I felt I wasn’t tapping into the full potential of the game’s musical range, so I added two more tracks that stood out to me for the ambience they create when they’re featured in the game.” – Ferdk, Musician & Arranger
Originally composed by Keiichi Okabe, the music of NieR: Automata has been taken and spun into a head-banging symphony that pays respect to the game’s aesthetic while also kicking things up a notch.
The album debuts today on Bandcamp and can currently be pre-ordered until its release for $4. You can check out more about the album on Ferdk’s Bandcamp or the Materia Collective website.
The acoustic duo of Sam and Steve that make up the Super Guitar Bros. have finally released their album covering the majority of the soundtrack from the classic Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Hinted at both over their Twitch stream and at last year’s MAG Underground show, the finishing touches were put together on the album and it first debuted in its entirety on the main stage at this past MAGFest last month.
Titled simple Ocarina of Time, the album covers 25 tracks from game’s original music, all done in acoustic guitar and touches on all of the classic tunes from the game, including “Song of Storms”, “Gerudo Valley” and “Kakoriko Village”.
Pre-sales of the album were available at MAGFest, but the album is now live to purchase either as a digital album or as a physical CD on the duo’s Bandcamp.
It might be 2018, but there’s still tons of music from 2017 that needs it’s proper due. Take for instance Materia Collective and artist Harry Lodes who released game arrangement album Reprisal in December. Featuring some of the most iconic pieces of game music from titles such as Final Fantasy VII, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Okami, and many others, Reprisal aims to take listeners into the heroic themes of each piece.
Whether I was defeating Yami, searching for rare pokémon, or journeying to rescue Princess Zelda from the clutches of Ganon, I always felt as if I was living in a single moment, frozen in time: one that permanently and eternally held a spirit of limitless adventure. Every remix is written to depict a single moment frozen in time, one I hope you will choose to live and re-live as I have. – Harry Lodes, Album Producer
Reprisal is currently available for purchase on Bandcamp, iTunes and streaming on Spotify. You can also find the album’s full credits and information on Materia Collective‘s website.
It’s true that 2017 was a prolific year for at least two things: 1.) Video Game Anniversaries, and 2.) Materia Collective releases. These two things are not mutually exclusive, and as we wind the year down to a close, there’s still a few more albums the label has yet to gift the VGM community, including the recent release of the Pokémon tribute album Harmony of a Champion.
A huge 9-track album dedicated to celebrating the music of Pokémon Red & Green, Harmony of a Champion is the brainchild of the Shinesparker community and the album creator Darren Kerwin. The album features the talents of several in the game music and arrangement scene, including Rozen (Sins of Hyrule), Laura Intravia (Video Games Live, Destiny), Spencer Bambrick (BestLuck), sound designer Gina Zdanowicz (BioShock 2, Just Cause 3) and more.
“I hold the original generation of games in high regard for all of the wonderful memories and friendships that were born from playing them. Harmony of a Champion is an opportunity to experience the story of Red and his journey from a ten-year-old boy who grew up in Pallet Town to becoming a Pokémon Champion, through the inclusion of sound design across the album to add narrative and express the story more effectively.” – Darren Kerwin, album creator
The added bonus is that Harmony of a Champion is licensed with all profits being donated to Child’s Play Charity, providing an extra special little send-off to the year. Harmony of a Champion is currently available on Bandcamp, iTunes and streaming on Spotify. You can learn more on the Materia Collective website.
