When it comes to the music of The Legend of Zelda series, the opinions of what is the best soundtrack can be as divisive as which game itself is the best. The second of the Nintendo 64 games, Majora’s Mask, tends to be high up on the list of older titles along with A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. Despite this, it’s soundtrack gets less spotlight, or at least it did until now.
The gang over at Materia Collective have put together a huge homage to the game with FATE: A Tribute to Majora’s Mask. Featuring 79 tracks in total and a host of arrangers (including former OSV editor Michael Hoffman), the album is an “eclectic mix of genres and styles that reflect the tone of the original soundtrack”.
Majora’s Mask is known for being a wildly different, yet powerful, addition to the Legend of Zelda series. Both the game and the soundtrack have had a profound effect on our lives, which is why we chose to pay tribute to it in this large-scale collaboration with other fans and members of the VGM community. This game in particular stands out to us because, more than any game in the franchise preceding it and following it, Majora’s Mask dealt with the positive and negative issues that human beings face every day as well as in major moments in life – grief, death, the inevitable passage of time, fear, rejection, and temptation, but also friendship, reconciliation, perseverance, justice, hope, and love. – Bandcamp Page
The album is separated into three distinct parts that convey different themes present within the game itself and reflected in it’s music and sets the listener up for a varied experience, left open to interpretation. Including individual arrangers and established artists alike, the album hopes to invoke all that Majora’s Mask has to tell its fans within it’s music.
FATE: A Tribute to Majora’s Mask will release, May 25th to Bandcamp and is currently available for pre-order through Materia Collective.
Edit: There was a correction made to the release date, from the 24th to the 25th.
Late last year, arranger Rozen chronicled the mythology of The Legend of Zelda games through the music of the Sins of Hyrule album. Now almost half a year later, Rozen is following up with an orchestral companion album to further whet your musical whistle.
Ballads of Hyrule is a 15 track album that includes several fan-favorite tracks from across the series, such as “Song of Storms” and “Zelda’s Lullaby” from Ocarina of Time, “Ballad of the Windfish” from Link’s Awakening, “Outset Island” and “Dragon Roost Island” from Wind Waker, and “Kass’s Theme” from Breath of the Wild. Taking these memorable themes and more, the album puts a majestic spin on the music of The Legend of Zelda game series.
“Ballads of Hyrule is the spiritual antithesis to Sins of Hyrule. The goal is to draw you into the more contemplative side of the lands of Hyrule; a nocturnal walk that feeds on the gifts left by the three goddesses: Nayru, Farore and Din, captured in nature.” – Rozen, Album Producer
Ballads of Hyrule drops on May 1 in digital, CD and vinyl formats and is currently available for pre-order on Bandcamp. The vinyl release will be limited to 500 copies, so enthusiasts are encouraged to act soon after the album releases.
Last year, the group GameLark released a tribute album to the composers of Rare and the music they produced over the developer’s tenure. This year, they plan to pay homage to a game series that has equally impacted video game music fans for an entire generation.
At the End of Time: A Tribute to Chrono Crono Cross & Chrono Trigger is a 17 track arrangement album that blends a variety of genres into one giant accolade to the series and to the composers of Chrono Trigger (Yasunori Mitsuda) and Chrono Cross (Nobuo Uematsu). A combination of surf rock, progressive metal, orchestral and more are represented on the album by GameLark contributors such as Toxodentrail, Daniel Romberger, Xnarky and the rest of the community.
“Our goal with At the End of Time was simple. We wanted to offer listeners a unique, memorable journey whether they’ve experienced these games or not. The album art also hints that no matter who you are, you are going to be pulled into this adventure, and you might not be the same when it ends.”- Allen Brasch, Producer
The album currently is available to pre-order on Bandcamp, iTunes and Google Play for around $10 and will be releasing fully on May 8th.
Artist Thennecan from Santiago, Chili along with the aid of Materia Collective has released his full album: C-Busters: A Tribute to Mega Man Classic. Featuring rock and metal fusion covers of tracks from several games within Capcom’s classic Mega Man series, the album pays homage to the Blue Bomber and the music that has stood the test of time.
“Mega Man 4 is one of the first games I ever played, and it is one of my favourites to this day. Mega Man also represents an extremely faithful community of people which have been keeping it alive for decades in different art styles, influenced games and music, so I definitely wanted to make my own contribution to that community.
Also, with this album I wish to break barriers in my local music industry, which hasn’t been aware of the potential and importance of videogame music at all. We’re musicians, and we make records too.” – Thennecan, Producer & Musician
Featuring music from Mega Man 1-10 (except for Mega Man 5 & 8, the poor black sheep that they are), the album spans 15 tracks and includes guest artists such as Jer Roque of Arc Impulse, Pokérus Project and more.
C-Busters: A Tribute to Mega Man Classic releases on May 11th and is available now for pre-order on Bandcamp and iTunes.
It’s becoming a fantastic trend to see video game vocalists getting more spotlight in today’s industry. Donna Burke, who has been the vocalist on several well-known titles such as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Silent Hill 2, among others in those franchises has broken out on her own and is being featured on a collection of game and anime music classics done in a classy jazz style.
Burke founded the GANIME JAZZ quintet in 2016 and has mostly focused on live performances. Now, GAME + ANIME = GANIME JAZZ is the quintet’s first studio album features 12 jazz-infused tracks, including several fan-favorites.
I hope that fans’ interest in videogames and anime leads to a newfound appreciation of jazz. Although I’m well-known for my videogame ballads, I want to take this opportunity to share my passion for jazz with my fans all around the world. – Donna Burke
GAME + ANIME = GANIME JAZZ releases today on Bandcamp in digital and physical formats. Burke will also be performing as a part of the Metal Gear In Concert tour in Los Angeles (Oct. 10), New York (Oct. 13), and Paris (Oct. 28).
Back in 2014, Materia Collective and Project Destati created the first of an effort to release the music of Kingdom Hearts in a live album with full orchestration, which they called LIGHT. Now, almost 4 years later the same teams have followed up the LIGHT album with the even larger second part of the tribute; DARKNESS.
Project Destati: DARKNESS includes 30 fan-favorite themes drawn from every title across the Kingdom Hearts franchise with nearly two-and-a-half hours of imaginative arrangements spanning 30 tracks. Starting with the very first game in the series and touching upon themes from Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and more, the tracks bring new life to the compositions of Yoko Shimomura, Utada Hikaru, Takeharu Ishimoto, and Tsuyoshi Sekito.
DARKNESS, Project Destati’s second of three volumes, has been a concept since 2014 that we’ve been slowly piecing together with the utmost care and forethought for each of the 30 tracks in this collection. Each track was individually given several months of planning and consideration to be arranged in such a way so as to tell the most complete musical story, envisioned with proper connections to other melodies within the KINGDOM HEARTS universe. – Sebastian Wolff, Producer
Project Destati: DARKNESS is available today in digital and limited edition physical CD formats via Bandcamp, iTunes and streaming on Spotify.
Spring may be here but dependent on where you are it may still feel as gloomy as the surface of Brinstar. So it’s appropriate that Materia Collective and composer Garrett McPherson have released an album tribute to the Metroid series and its music.

Return to Zebes is available now on Bandcamp for $7. You can find the full credits for the album on Materia Collective‘s website.
