I never knew that electronic music could play so nicely with a choir. I guess it’s been done before, but rarely have I heard it done so well. A couple weeks ago we mentioned that Streamline Sound was releasing a remix single from Alone in the Dark Inferno featuring DJ Tiësto, and we’ve finally got our hands on it.

I guess the prerequisite here is that you like electronic music. DJ Tiësto is known on dance floors around the world for his pumping electronic music, and this release is no different. The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices ensemble is actually quite the co-star here despite the name recognition that Tiësto commands, so I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this release.

Read our impressions of the lengthily-titled Tiësto Presents Alone in the Dark: Infero – Edward Carnby single after the jump.

Although I typically skip it, I’m going to start with a track list to give you an idea of what’s here:

1. Edward Carnby Tiësto Radio Edit
2. Edward Carnby Tiësto Vocal Mix
3. Edward Carnby Tiësto Instrumental Mix
Extra: Edward Carnby Tiësto Music Video

It’s basically all the same track any way you look at it. I’ll jump right to the 6:35 long “Edward Carnby Tiësto Vocal Mix” as it’s the full-length version of the radio edit, which comes in at 3:50. This is the definitive version of the song in my mind, as the amazing Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices make their presence felt in a big way throughout the floor-pounding techno remix. I was impressed to hear the vocals getting their fair share of time in the spotlight, which is great because they sound absolutely stunning. Tiësto does a commendable job controlling the flow of the piece, as the full-length version never feels too long through its many lulls and swells.

The “Tiësto Instrumental Version” is the vocal mix without the vocals (obvious, right?). While the music stands on its own as an expertly-crafted electronic remix that pays tribute to Olivier Deriviere’s original composition, I simply don’t see any reason not to include the powerful choral segments.

As you can see, there is also a music video included on the disc. It’s the same one we posted along with the announcement two weeks ago, but it’s nice to have it on disc in high-resolution. As for the product itself, we are reviewing the CD single, but there’s also a limited edition 12″ picture disk that was released. The CD comes in a glossy cardboard case and sports some of the game’s artwork alongside an extensive list of credits.

You can pick this one up in your local record store, or online at the Black Hole Recordings Shop. It’s a great remix, so if you can find it, and you dig DJ Tiësto’s work, check it out. I definitely want to hear more from The Myestery of Bulgarian Voices after hearing it.

Did you enjoy the Alone in the Dark soundtrack? Do you think more commercial artists should get involved with the gaming industry?
