AOTW Rock

A lot of the rock covers that we cover on Arrangement of the Week often veer towards the heavy metal side of things, so it’s always nice when I come across something a little different like we have for this week.

Today’s arrangement is an acoustic rock version of “Another Winter” and “Gate of Your Dream” from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Our artist is Brandon Strider, who normally implements a heavy metal style to his pieces, so it was interesting to hear his remix titled “1-Up.”

The track starts with just the piano, for what at first seems is going to be a mellow acoustic cover. But soon the piece launches into a full acoustic rock arrangement, complete with drums, guitar, bass, and the already introduced piano. There’s some other nice touches with the inclusion of bells and a pan flute doubling the melodic line with the guitar. Even when electric guitar shows up for brief sections it’s still an undistorted sound, keeping the tone light for the whole piece.

The use of the pan flute is really what grabbed my attention when I first listened to this track. It seems like such an odd choice for a rock ensemble, yet it ends up being a perfect fit for creating this delightfully upbeat arrangement. It’s a great interpretation of Anamanaguchi’s music that I’ll definitely be adding to my holiday playlist.
