In a rather surprising announcement, Autumn Games and Reverge Labs have announced that they’re teaming up with Michiru Yamane on their upcoming 2D fighter title, Skullgirls. They’ve released a brief interview with Yamane where she discusses how she was approached to work on the title and what to expect from her contributions. Additionally, a video was released featuring one of her tracks from the game which sounds like a jazzy take on her signature Castlevania sound (see and hear above).

While the game is set to be released in summer 2011, I’m sure Yamane fans will be scouring the site for new videos to hear her music. I can bet at this point that a digital soundtrack release will probably become a reality, but in the meantime, what do you think of this news? Are you surprised to see Michiru Yamane working on a Western title, and a fighting game of all things?

Hit the jump for the official press release.

Skullgirls’ Soundtrack Written in the Key of Yamane

Autumn Games enlists legendary video game composer to create music for its upcoming 2D console fighter

Los Angeles – April 20, 2011 – Crank the volume up to 11, because Skullgirls promises to have truly epic mood music: Distinguished Japanese videogame composer Michiru Yamane has signed on to create the soundtrack for Skullgirls, the highly-anticipated 2D fighting game from Autumn Games and Reverge Labs. Renowned for her exemplary work on Konami’s Castlevania series, Michiru Yamane has spent more than 20 years composing music for video games, including noteworthy titles Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Pro Evolution Soccer and TWINBEE.

“It was clear from the start that Skullgirls is something special, and I’m constantly seeking new and innovative projects to create for,” said composer Michiru Yamane. “After seeing the game’s distinctive artistic direction, and discussing its beautiful premise with Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, it was easy to be inspired. Because Skullgirls has such a unique style, it is important that the music both complements and adds to the game’s atmosphere. I think fans will be very happy with the direction we are taking.”

Skullgirls is a new 2D fighting game that puts players in control of fierce warriors in an extraordinary Dark Deco world. The team is led by renowned fighting game champion Mike “Mike Z” Zaimont and artist Alex “o_8” Ahad, whose work has been featured in many publications, including Lava Punch and Girls of Gaming. Using advanced graphical technology never before achieved in a game of its type, Skullgirls is currently in development for a 2011 release on high-definition home consoles.
