Here we are yet again with another contest. This time it’s for the latest album from The OneUps: Super Mario Kart Album. While this was meant to be a digital-only release, Mustin caved in to the fans and printed a limited run of 1,000 copies, and we have one here for one lucky reader. I highly recommend checking out Audun’s review as well as the “Mario Circuit” music video and the band’s Bandcamp page for streaming samples.
So, what do you have to do to win a copy? Simple! Reply to this post with a brief description of your most memorable Super Mario Kart moment. Mine is using a feather to jump into the enclosed pools of water on Battle Mode Stage 2 and insisting my friend discard his red shell before I come out. I literally sat in there for 5-10 minutes before my friend gave in. Anyway, you have until Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST to enter, at which point we’ll select a winner at random. Good luck!
What do you think of The OneUps’ latest album? Tell us your stories!

Debating whether or not the ‘trophy fish’ is a real fish or simply an effigy with my housemates at 3 a.m.
Dang Jayson literally stole my idea.
Another memory I have is figuring out the timing to jump over a red shell. My friends would always be amazed and never quite figured it out.
Finding that feather shortcut in… that one ghost house… can’t remember the name but it drove my brothers crazy when I would jump way ahead of them.
I bet most of our favorite moments involve that feather. They should bring it back in the next mario kart. 🙂
You can jump over red shells??

My favorite memory was on the original SNES Mario Kart. My family was selling my childhood home and as they signed the papers, I was desperately trying to finally beat this game that plagued me. As we finally sold our house, I beat the Special Cup at the highest level. Was a type of bookend both for my childhood and for Mario Kart 🙂
As I don’t own the game, all of my memories with it have been on the N64, with friends. At parties. Too many fun memories.
Like playing drinking games with it. Hehe.
My best memory of SMK (aside from trying to jump over red shells – already mentioned) has to be beating the Special Cup while tiny. The sense of accomplishment was great.
Most memorable? Figuring out how to manually shrink yourself. Calls for good times, every time.
Well, not sure if this is in time since you said Tuesday June 6, (which is not a real date hahaha) but I’ll give it a go anyway.
My favorite moment in Mario Kart ever is the first time we found out about the ghosts in time trials. I was taking turns playing with all of my cousins and we were trying to get the best time on Mario Circuit 1. I remember specifically we were using Koopa (not Bowser but the little Koopa) and after laying down a particularly amazing time I started the track up again. As the green light sounded and I started to go suddenly a ghost of Koopa appeared that was ridiculously quick. We all started screaming and figured it must be the best time of the makers of the game. In the end, I’m still not sure if it was my previous time or the makers of the game, but it was an incredible moment to be sure.
Keep in mind this was in the days before the internet, so finding secrets in games was a big deal. Ah, those were the days…
Not sure if this counts, as it’s not strictly in game, but here goes: When I was growing up, my uncle was sort of a loser — couldn’t hold a job, he visited my grandparents a lot, etc. So he would end up at our house a lot. And whenever he came, he, my dad and I would play Super Mario Kart. All. Night. This is at least a once a week thing, for years. We never got tired of it.
One day, they were playing — and I remember, it was in Bowser’s Castle — and suddenly, there came a high pitch noise and a bright light from the cavernous SNES slot in the entertainment center. When we ejected the game and looked, there was indeed a burned spot. We opened it up and found the battery had been incinerated. Super Mario Kart remains, to this day, the only game I’ve ever played so much that it literally exploded.
My most memorable Super Mario Kart moment was playing on Rainbow Road for the first time. Besides the funky music, it was very memorable because it’s by far the most difficult track in the game to race on since there was nothing to prevent you from falling off the track!
My most memorable Super Mario Kart moment was when I was caught cheating by my girlfriend. She literally caught me in the act with her cousin – long story. Anyway, she started screaming and was grabbing my stuff and throwing it at me. At this time her cousin was getting her clothes and getting dressed as fast as she could. I started shouting at my gf to get out and that was when she started knocking my dvds and collectable figures off my shelves. This really pissed me off so I tried to shove her out of the room but she dodged and got around me. I guess at this point her cousin got the chance to dash for it and she went out. So my gf was cursing at me and calling me everything and anything and was kicking the stuff she’d thrown on the floor. I was so angry I grabbed the first thing nearest to me and threw it right at her face. I actually hit her square in the eye – there was so much blood and she put her hands over her face I didn’t realise what had happened at first. She was moaning and crying and I didn’t know what to do at this point but then the cops showed up. Turns out her cousin had called them on my girlfriend but they come in and see her bleeding and arrested me. In the end it went to trial and I was found guilty of battery and was incarcerated. She even sued me in small claims court when I got out to pay for her medical bills. I counterclaimed for the price of a new Super Mario Kart cartridge because mine had got blood on it because I guess that was what I grabbed and threw at her and hit her in the eye. The judge dismissed it though but she won her claim. It’s all good though because me and her cousin are still together.
Daniel. Seriously. WTF? Great story, but your entry was late.
